1st the relationship between automakers and their suppliers has under dramatic changes. They original has short term/ arm length contract per part before 1980s. The fierce competition between outside suppliers and inside suppliers, who provide all of the business for indefinite period. The issue is that internal communication is insufficient.
2nd: since 1980, the automakers industry has changes in supplier system. 1: few suppliers provide each type of part 2: more interchange information 3: longer contract with outside suppliers 4. less commitment to own component divisions
3rd: the influences of above changes. First, the automakers are willing to give up their monopsony power over outside suppliers. Second: reducing vertical integration. Last, the new supplier relations never seen before.
4th: the main purpose of this article is to prove that automakers need to trade off between promoting new technical process and maintaining buyer bargaining power |
