P1 Traditionally US corporates rely on cost-cutting measures such as downsizing and outsourcing to improve productivity. But such measures are less successful:
1. few than half companies raised profit and only a third increased productivities.
2. downsizing affects the stability of the employees: either leave the company or burned out.
-> downsizing outperform the stock in first 6 months but underperform after 3 years.
P2 Alternative way to improve productivity: employee stock-ownership.
PROs:
1. employees have increased responsibilities and link their performance to compensation.
2. Assurance not to be layoff.
3. Employees in some companies: happier, more productive, better paid .
CONs:
1. Stock ownership is difficult to implement: reeducation, persuading manager to accept diminished authority.
-> many firms still rely on downsizing and outsourcing |
