8月18日The best way to improve the quality of education is to increase teachers' salaries
In order to improve the quality of education, some people believe that the best method is to increase teacher's salaries, while others pay more attention to buy advanced facilities such as new textbooks, or building new research centers and so forth. The fact is that if more money are spent on teacher's salaries, there will be less money to buy teaching facilities. Also, if teachers all have high salaries than others do, they may become more focus on how to relax and less on their teaching quality. Therefore, I think the strategy to increase salaries for teachers is not effective to improve the quality of education.
In the first place, increasing teacher's salaries means that less money will be spended on facilities. The outcome of a school depends on its incomes, which comes for the tuitions and government's financial support, private donations. So that the incomes of any schools are limited to some extent. The increase of teachers' salaries will decrease the money spent on others things such as buying facilities. When I was in middle school, the principal decided to build a new library for students. On the other hand, other teachers in the school wanted to use these money as their salary since they thought the school had a small library that could meet students' needs. These teachers' voices were so strong that the principal changed his ideas. At last, the contruction of a new library was postponed. The result was that students did not have so many books or other materials in the old small library, but no one paid attention to this problems.
Additionally, high salaries will cause teachers distracted so that their teaching quality will decrease to some extent. What will you do if you have so much money in hand? Most of people would like to buy a new house, travel to other parts of the world with their family. All of these are fine for all of us. But when I was a poor student in primary school, I heard my teachers talked about their traveling to the United States-the clean air, the high mountains, also white people who speak English-and could not concentrate on my study any more.
On the contrary, spending money on buying teaching is beneficial for both students and teachers. A high-tech library offers students books, CDs, computers and so forth, which can help students study effciently and effectively. At the same time, teachers can use these facilities to improve their teaching abilites. In contrast, a school have so many high salary teachers, but with a small and outdated library can not attract excellent students. Excellent teachers are also unwilling to these schools because there are not advanced facilities to do their researches in these schools. Then the teaching quality can not be ensured, not to say improved.
Of course, teachers are considered as master educators of human beings, their quality of life should be ensured by salaries. It is no doubt that teachers should have a reasonable salary. However, the method of offering teachers high salaries to improve the quaity of education is not reasonable.
TPO 16 Some problems relate to old cultural artifacts and archaeolotists in Britain are discussed in the reading text. On the contrary, the professor of the lecture states that new rules and guide line have been issued to change all of the three areas mentioned in the reading text.
First, the new guide line says that construction companies must hire scientists to examine whether the sites are of scientific interest or value before the contruction. If the sites indeed attrect archaeologists' attention, archaeologists, companies and government officials should work together to make a plan about how to perserve the site. The solution may be build around the site or unearth the site properly. So, the first problem in the reading text can be solved in this way.
Second, the professor points out that according to the new guide line, sciectists are paid by the construcion companies. All of the works such as examination, plan and so forth are all paid by these companies. This new financial support can provide enough fund for archaeologists to do a great range of researches than before.
Third, the professor explains that all of the stages-examine the sites, make plans to preserve the site-need archaeologists' participation. Also, new jobs are offerd to archaeologists for collecting data, writing articles and so on. Therefore, new paid jods are provided to archaeologists; the number of these jobs are the highest than ever before. |
