8月8日   What is the main role of the university professor, to educate students or to do research?
In modern society, an increasing number of people become more focus on the education quality that the unviersity or college provided to the public than before. Educatin quality affects university's reputation, it is also essential for students' future work. One of the problems directly related to this topic is that which is the main role of university professors: to educate students or to do research? According to some people' concerns, professors in the university should pay more attention to teach students. On the other hand, there still other people who believe that professors need to do researches to keep pace with their peers, to have a more deep understanding of the subject which they teach. In addition, they do not do researches alone, their students can help them do researches. Therefore, I agree with the point that professors should do more researches. My reasons are as follow.

To begin with, university professors need to do researches to explore new things in their field, in order to compete with others. As we all know, the resources are always limited, professors get their funding mainly from the government, companies, private associations and so forth. If they do not represent the leading position in their field, no one will give them fundings they need. One important way to keep at the forefront postion is to do researches. I am a university student, my professor spend most of his spare time on his researches, which is about the LED. He got a lot of rewards from the state, and even applied two patents from the US. Then companies which produce LED contact with him and support his researches. With these financial supports, he purchases updating facilities and enhances the efficiency of products.

Another point to consider is that as students, professor need to do researches to update themselves. The rapid changes in sciences and technologies make mordern people can be easily left behind by others if they stand still. Some courses in the university, such as computer science or biology, are changing from time to time. Professors just can not talk about technologies which are used ten years ago to their students. If they do so, their students would have problems to find a job, just because what they learned in the university are no longer used by the company any more. On the contrary, by doing researches, university professors can keep their step in the frontline of new technologies used by companies or other research centers.

In the end, doing researches is a communal activity. Professors may need their students' help to do some of their researches. And students sometime play an important role in doing researches, they have creative ideas, they are eager to make some changes, and they are not confined by the norms as their professors do. Therefore, doing researches both benefits students and professors.

Of course, professors have the responsibility to teach their students well, and provide them up-to-date knowledge to make them really educated. As a result, they need to do researches in order to give their students the new information. Thus, I think university professors should put researches in the first place.

In the reading text, the author talks about problems relate to on-line encyclopedias. In contrast, the professor in the lecture does no agree with the author. She says that the author's opinions may based on prejudices, and also ignores the advantages of on-line encyclopedias.

First, contrary to what the author says that on-line encyclopedias include errors, the professor argues that all encyclopedias contain errors. The advantage of on-line encyclopedias is that errors can be corrected quickly after they are found. However, traditional encyclopedias may remain these mistakes for decades because it is difficult to make changes in paper based materials.

Second, the author says that on-line encyclopedias can be easily changed by hackers and other unscrupulous users. While the professor points out that people had already realized this problem, and they make the crucial part of on-line encyclopedias read only format, in this way the crucial part of it can be protected. They also use special auditors to monitor every changes in on-line encyclopedias in order to avoid this problems.

Third, according to the reading text, on-line encyclopedias contains information which is not very important to the topic. However, the professor explains that the space in traditional encyclopedias is limited. Therefore, writers should choose which are important based on their experiences. Thus, traditional encyclopedias can not cover all people' interests. But this problem does not exsist in on-line encyclopedias, the space is sufficient to include various views and topics in order to reflect people' different interests. This is the most important advantage of on-line encyclopedias.

8月9日  you can know a lot about a person through the types of friends this person has

As an old saying goes: birds of a feather flock together, friends often share some similar characteristics. If one person like to play football, then he/she would like to make friends with others who have the same hobby. On the contrary, it is hardly possible for a police officer to be friens of criminals. Therefore, I believe that the friends one has can really be a good indication of his/her personality. My reasons are as follows.

In the first place, the types of friends one person has show the preference of this person to the large extent. Human is a kind of social animal, which always loves to work together to finish something. In addition, working with friends makes one feel freely and relax, which is vastly different from working with co-workers. Under this pleasant atmosphere, one often behaves naturaly, this gives others chances to know something about this person. For instance, one of my frineds named Chen Hui love studying economics though his major is engneering. He loves to have meals with students majored in economy, then he has opportunities to talk about the topics in economy with them. From the friends he has, one can easily find out Chen Hui is interested in economics.

Another equally important aspect is that the types of friends this person has can give others the clue of his/her personality. In general, active people have more friends than passive ones. I have an intorvert character, most of the time, I do not like to make frineds wiht other initiatively. As a result, I have less friends than my classmates who have an extrovert character. Moreover, I am serious about my friends' hoesty, so that my friends and me are honest to each other when we talk about our life or other kinds of questions. Thus, when you see my friends and me talking together, you can easily find that all of us are sincere.

Additionally, I have to admit that some people love to make friends with various kinds of people, which makes it is difficult to know this person from the types of friends they have. Moreover, some people would like to pretend to be one's friends for other purposes but not sincere to be one's true friends. After his/her purpose is got, he/she will end friendship with you. People may do not like others who is like this, when they find their friends cheat them, they would feel hurted. Then, they will quit their friendship with them.

In conclusion, the types of friends a person has can show this person's perference and the clue of his/her personality. Even if in some specific situation friendship can not be sincere, it would not affect others' understanding of that person. Therefore, I agree with the point that one can know a lot about a person through the types of friends this person has.

The author of the reading text talks about saveral reasons that American wood producers will not work hard for ecocertification. While, the professor in the lecture does not agree with the author, and says that wood companies in the United States will eventually accept ecocertification.

First, contrary to what is stated in the reading passage that American consumers do not trust in advertising, the professor argues that consumers in the U.S usually distinguish claims made by companies for their own products and claims made by independent agencies. They react favourably to claims from independent organization with international trustworthiness. Thus, the first reason in the reading text is unsounded.

Second, the professor explains that consumers in the U.S care about the price only when the difference of price between products is too huge. If the difference is not so much, like less than 5%. Consumers will consider other factors rather than price. Also, American consumers really value environmentally friendly products like the certified wood. Therefore, the second reason in the passage is reputed.

Third, the professor points out that in contrast to what is mentioned in the reading text, American companies will adopt this certification. The reason is that wood companies need to compete with foreign companies who have already adopted this new practice. Otherwise, foreign companies' certified wood products will crowed in American market since consumers in the U.S are interested in these products. So, the last reason in the reading text is also unconvincing., according to the professor.

8月10日    Some people say we should never be impolite to another person. Do you agree or disagree?

In our daily life, we often confront with situations that we may have conflicts with others people. In these events, would you like to keep polite, and solve the problems politely? Or will you just out of you temper and to be at odds with them? Most of the time, I prefer to be polite with others about everything, which does not mean I lack the ability to be in charge of the situation, on the other hand, to be impolite with another person will never help to solve the question. In addition, being impolite with others may cause me can not keep harmony with others around me.

For one thing, being impolite to others may cause them feel uncomfortable even depressed. It is human nature to prefer the feeling of being confirmed by others. Such feeling makes them feel they are accepted by people around them. However, rude people can not give others such feeling since they are likely to ignore others' progress or improvement. When I was at high school, one of my teachers was very serious to us. He criticized us although we made progress in our study. If we made some mistakes, he would lose his temper and shouted loudly to us, said that all of us were stupid as pig and should not waste our time to study at school. All of us felt nervous and unpleasant in his classes, which was not merely boring, but unacceptable to some extent. In this case, his impolite character did harm to us.

In addition, if one always have a rude character, people tend to keep a distance with him/her. No one love to live near a rude person, and enjoy the feeling of been treated impolitely. The result is that rude people have fewer friends, the relationships between them and their nearby people are strained. Such as when one chooses a house to buy, there are many of the houses to be selected. But people are less likely to buy a house which means they are going to live with a rude neighbour. Living with a rude neighbour means so many things people have to consider. If you do something unintendly but hurt your impolite neighbour's feeling, there would be so much quarrel to be predicable.

On the contrary, polite people have the effect of create a harmony and pleasant atmosphere in the community and other places. Other people are willing to live with people who are not rude. For instance, when I was in middle school where was far away from my home, I lived in campous. One of my roomamtes was so rude that everyone would keep a distance from him. Unfortunately, he did not realize this because that was his habit in his own home to be selfish. Later, our teacher talked to him about this question and he quickly changed his rude behavors. He became polite to roommates, so that all of us felt so comfortable to live with him now.

In conclution, being impolite to others may cause them feel uncomfortable and depressed, and makes others keep a long distance with us. In contrast, it is often beneficial to be polite to others. Thus, I suggeset that all of us in this world to be polite to others in order to create a harmony society.

The reading text cites evidences that Chevalier distorted or invented events in his memoir to make it more exciting. On the contrary, the professor says that none memoirs can be exactly correct in every detail. In fact, she states that Chevlier's memoir is pretty good, and by and large an realiable historical resource.

First, the professor explains that Chevalier indeed was wealthy and had large mount of properties. The fact was that he needed to convert his wealth into actual money before he spent it. And this would cost him some days to wait for the cash, therefore he had to borrow some during days waiting for the money. This did not indicate his was poor as the author says in the passage.

Second, the professor points out that Chevalier worte down everything he could remember immediately after his conversation wiht Voltaire on the notes. In addition, he kept these notes for many years and used them when he worte the memoir. Moreover, other people comfirmed that Chevalier use notes and journals when he worte his memoir. In contrast, in the reading text, critics cast doubts on the accuracy of the conversations between Chevalier and Voltaire.

Third, the professor agrues that in the prison of  Venice, others  had even more powerful friends than Chevalier, but they could not brible to escape. Additionally, some old documents showed that soon after Chevalier's escape, the ceiling he lived had to be repaired. This might support what Chevalier said in his memoir before the reason that the repair after his escapre but not before.

8月11日  To improve the quality of education university should spend more money on salary for professor.

In order to improve the quality of education in university, some people believe that the best method is to increase teacher's salaries, while others think it is better to improve or buy teaching facilities. It is obviours that if the taxpayer's money are spent largely on teacher's salaries, there will be less money to buy teaching facilities. Also, if teachers all have high salaries than other carees do, they may become more focus on how to relax and less on their teaching quality. Therefore, I think the strategy to spend more money on salary for professor is not an good idea.

In the first place, taxpayers pay attention to the use of their money that they paid. Since the total amount of the money is limited, increasing teacher's salaries means that less money will be spended on build teaching facilities in public schools. As we all know in China, taxpayer's children are going to the school that were constructed by the government, and the money was come from the taxpayer. If citizens in China are not satisfied with the facilities in universities, they will not send their children to these schools even if they may have high salary teachers. The most important factor in kindergardens and primary schools is the safety, children there are more vulnerable than students in high schools and universities. In addition, the increase of professor's salary is paid by students in private universities and colleges. Thus students' tuition and fee will be much higher if the salary of professor's is increased.

Additionally, high salaries will cause teachers distracted and pay less attention to their teaching. Compared to other types of career such as cleaners and blue-collar workers, teachers are well paid, and they also have so many weekends and vocations as spare time the same as students. They may earn their own money in their spare time. I have heard that professors in the United States open their own companies, at the same time they also teach students in university. I do not think they need more money becasue their incomes for their own business and their salary as professor are already sufficient for them.

On the contrary, building teaching facilities can be good to students as well as to teachers. A high-level library offers students books, CDs, computers and so forth to study, which can help students study effciently and effectively. At the same time, professors can use these facilities too. In contrast, a school have so many high salary professor who drive sports car to work, wear expensive clothes, but with a small and outdated library can not attract excellent students. Top scientists are also unwilling to these universities because there are not advanced facilities to do their researches. Then the teaching quality can not be ensured, not to say improved.

Of course, teachers are considered as master educators of human beings, their quality of life should be ensured. It is no doubt that teachers should have a reasonable salary. However, the method of giving all professor high salaries to improve the quaity of education is valid.

The reading text supports the pollution hypothesis of the decline of sea otters along the coast of North American. On the contrary, the speaker says that predators are likely to be the main reason after all.

First, the speaker states that dead sea otters have not been found on the beach along the coast of Alaska, which means that the decline is unlikely to be caused by infections after their resistance decreased by pollution. This situation can be better explained by predators. This hypothesis is more consistent with the fact, since if sea otters are killed by predators, people can not sea dead sea otters on the beach.

Second, the lecturer explains that even if orca prefers to pray on whales, whales disapper in this area because of human hunting. This pushes orca change its diet to small animals that are available. This can better explain the entire decline of small animals such as sea otters, seals and sea lions. While the explanation in the reading text seems disreputed.

Third, the speakers points out that the uneven pattern of decline can be better explained by the hypothesis of predators. The decline is determined by whether areas sea otters lived are accessible to orca or not. In areas where are access to orca, sea otters declined greatly. On the contrary, in areas thatare shallow or rocky, which orca can not arrive, sea otter population keeps unchanging.

The author of the reading text talks about some advantages of fuel-cell engines. Whlile, the professor in the lecture does not agree with the author. She says that the author is too optimistic. At the same time, fuel-cell engines are not the solution the problems as the author says in the text.

First, in contrast to what the author states that hydorgen is easy to access. The professor explains that hydorgen in water and natural gas are not directly usable. In fact, hydrogen needs to be make artificially and convert to pure liquid state. It is very difficult to do this becasue this process need very low temperature. Thus, it is not very easy to produce and store hydorgen. This directly contradicts to its counterpart in the reading text.

Second, the professor points out that unlike what is said in the reading text, the process of producing hydrogen will polute the environment. The reason is that the process of producing hydrogen need coal or oil as power. Thus, the burnning of coal or oil will poluted the environment.

Third, the professor says that fuel-cell engines are not cheap as the author says in the passage. One metal which is necessary to produce fuel-cell engines is too expensive. And without this kind of metal, the rete of chemical reaction in order to generate electricity will decrease. Scientists have not find another metal to replace this kind of metal. Thus, the fuel-cell engines are not so cheap.
