8月8日 What is the main role of the university professor, to educate students or to do research? In modern society, an increasing number of people become more focus on the education quality that the unviersity or college provided to the public than before. Educatin quality affects university's reputation, it is also essential for students' future work. One of the problems directly related to this topic is that which is the main role of university professors: to educate students or to do research? According to some people' concerns, professors in the university should pay more attention to teach students. On the other hand, there still other people who believe that professors need to do researches to keep pace with their peers, to have a more deep understanding of the subject which they teach. In addition, they do not do researches alone, their students can help them do researches. Therefore, I agree with the point that professors should do more researches. My reasons are as follow.
To begin with, university professors need to do researches to explore new things in their field, in order to compete with others. As we all know, the resources are always limited, professors get their funding mainly from the government, companies, private associations and so forth. If they do not represent the leading position in their field, no one will give them fundings they need. One important way to keep at the forefront postion is to do researches. I am a university student, my professor spend most of his spare time on his researches, which is about the LED. He got a lot of rewards from the state, and even applied two patents from the US. Then companies which produce LED contact with him and support his researches. With these financial supports, he purchases updating facilities and enhances the efficiency of products.
Another point to consider is that as students, professor need to do researches to update themselves. The rapid changes in sciences and technologies make mordern people can be easily left behind by others if they stand still. Some courses in the university, such as computer science or biology, are changing from time to time. Professors just can not talk about technologies which are used ten years ago to their students. If they do so, their students would have problems to find a job, just because what they learned in the university are no longer used by the company any more. On the contrary, by doing researches, university professors can keep their step in the frontline of new technologies used by companies or other research centers.
In the end, doing researches is a communal activity. Professors may need their students' help to do some of their researches. And students sometime play an important role in doing researches, they have creative ideas, they are eager to make some changes, and they are not confined by the norms as their professors do. Therefore, doing researches both benefits students and professors.
Of course, professors have the responsibility to teach their students well, and provide them up-to-date knowledge to make them really educated. As a result, they need to do researches in order to give their students the new information. Thus, I think university professors should put researches in the first place.
TPO 6 In the reading text, the author talks about problems relate to on-line encyclopedias. In contrast, the professor in the lecture does no agree with the author. She says that the author's opinions may based on prejudices, and also ignores the advantages of on-line encyclopedias.
First, contrary to what the author says that on-line encyclopedias include errors, the professor argues that all encyclopedias contain errors. The advantage of on-line encyclopedias is that errors can be corrected quickly after they are found. However, traditional encyclopedias may remain these mistakes for decades because it is difficult to make changes in paper based materials.
Second, the author says that on-line encyclopedias can be easily changed by hackers and other unscrupulous users. While the professor points out that people had already realized this problem, and they make the crucial part of on-line encyclopedias read only format, in this way the crucial part of it can be protected. They also use special auditors to monitor every changes in on-line encyclopedias in order to avoid this problems.
Third, according to the reading text, on-line encyclopedias contains information which is not very important to the topic. However, the professor explains that the space in traditional encyclopedias is limited. Therefore, writers should choose which are important based on their experiences. Thus, traditional encyclopedias can not cover all people' interests. But this problem does not exsist in on-line encyclopedias, the space is sufficient to include various views and topics in order to reflect people' different interests. This is the most important advantage of on-line encyclopedias. |
