189. 公共交通
P1: a year after the "extreme makeover", the congestion decreased in the intersection, buses spent less time waiting to get through, and there were half as many accidents with total traffic increased by a third. Students from a local engineering school had a research and reported that both drivers and cyclists were using signals of the electronic or hand variety more often. They also found that the people perceived the place to be more dangerous.
P2: Monderman believe that the best way to change people's behavior is to change the context. This is the foundation of his traffic revolution. In the 1980s, he was assigned to improve the traffic safety in Oudehaske and decrease the accidents. Unlike other engineers, he did not choose to install speed bumps, warning signs, or any highly visible interventions.
P3: He suggested that Oudehaske simply be made to seem more villagelike. Signs are removed, curbs torn out, and the asphalt replaced with red paving brick. The road looks only five meters wide, but had all the possibilities of six.
P4: the results are striking. Without bumps or flashing warning signs, drivers slowed a lot. Rather than clarity and segregation, he had created confusion and ambiguity. Through the new road design, he subtly suggested the proper course of action.
Author's opinion: first the author points out that there are striking results out of a traffic design, and then introduce the design and the purpose behind. In the end, the author explained why this design can work. The author agrees with the efficiency of this traffic design.
