women in colonies: patriarchal system
but, law and rules are varied among dif regions.
1, common law(in England)--more individualistic
2, civil law(Spain)--- inferior(travelers)
- far more protective of women's property than common law(出乎意料due to Spain being patriarchal),
- contrary to Spanish men's expectation, not consistent with English law
- women gained tangible benefits from civil law
New Mexico--Spanish law(civil)
New York--common law
e.g. 1, own property under her control, as widow, continued to control
2, full control of the dowry, arras, and receive half of the commnunity property
3, husband manage or sell the community property, after his death, widow control of half, the other half gives to children.
