V hi, how are you?
VO:Do you have a resume?
Me: yes,
V so you are going to UM, why UM?
Me: first, because it has the strongest combination in General Management and Supply Chain Management, which fits my career goal. I've been in logistics field for 6 years...
Second, I need to gain international perspective, because SCM is a huge network connect the world together, so for my career development I must understand international operation.
Third, UM has very strong alumni network in China.
V So you began your work in March
Me: Yes, I moved to Shanghai last November.
V so you didn't work for 4 months.
Me: Yes, but I did some freelance work as translation in between to make some money, besides, there was the Chinese New Year in between.
V yes.
V Do you have Shanghai Residence
V Do you have any proof
Me: Yes, I have the residence card with me。
不知道她是不是能看懂中文的东西,我说了一句sorry that i don't have the translation for the residence card, 她说it's ok.
V this is only your application paper.
Me: No, this is my residence card, i have permanant Shanghai residence,i don't need 居住证
V I have done so many interviews and read so many materials, how can you don't have 居住证, if you have already lived in shanghai for such a long time.
V 终于恍然大悟,oh, so you have Shanghai 户口。
Me:(虽然被她搞得有点生气,还是面带笑容的回答)yes, and as you can see that my passport is also issued in Shanghai.
V what do your parents do?
My father is the chief Engineer in his company, and his annual salary is XXX,XXX,He is my model, he is a graduate and he can make even much more money after his retirement.
V So, is money the most important thing for you?
Me: No, of course not. Career is more important for me, I need to be regonized in the company i am working at to show my strong ability.
V What's your plan after graduation.
Me: I will come back to Shanghai and secure a manager position in supply Chain management in a multinational company or any other company can give me better chance for my development.
V (因为我回答期间提到过国内的social network,于是她问)you can also know some friends and build your nextwork in US, coz you will stay there for two years, why not stay there?
Me:No, I don't think so. I once worked in Beijing, and now working in Shanghai, I have very strong social network in China. I don't think I will have the same strong one in US as the one I have in China within two years(这倒也成为后来一个她抓我把柄的地方了). Besides, after I come back, my parents can also give me strong support in my career development.

然后停顿了大概30秒后,估计她是在考虑,然后还是去拿那张纸,开始对我说sorry,i can't give you the visa this time,我打算反驳,不给机会。迅速盖下章,不管我说什么,对我说my decision is final, but I can tell you the reasons, 然后说出了让我震惊的理由:
1)you applied visa 4 times with 4 different schools with different reasons.

2)As you only moved to Shanghai last November and began work in March, so you don't have strong social network in such a short time as you said(就因为我说我在美国两年不可能有在中国这么多年建立起来的网络强,我真是没想到啊), so you are not stable.
I have enough proof that I have strong network in Shanghai.

感觉上她质疑的就是几个时点的问题,moved to Shanghai last November, start to work in Shanghai this March, and go for visa this June.

第一个问题好像都是why UM(darden)?

MY $0.02:

1) You don't have to volunteer the truth/facts, especially if they are not favorable for you. Eg. the fact that you did not work for 4 months, and that you freelanced as a translator (not a good job for an aspirant for business leader positions), etc.

2) Be very concise with the answers to "regular questions" like "why this school", "why MBA", "what do your parents do", etc. I find the VOs tend to be very impatient with such questions, so they cut your short frequently. Try shrinking your answers to 1-2 sentences. Do not list too many supporting information, or you will sound not so self-confident. Just speak out what you really want out of the school, firmly and to the point.

3) Prepare English versions (such as notarized versions) of the supporting documents. Save yourself time to explain and avoid misunderstandings.

4) Trust yourself. You are the best!
