GWD5-Q35 to Q37:

Even more than mountainside slides of mud or snow, naturally occurring forest fires promote the survival of aspen trees.Aspens’ need for fire may seem illogical (5) since aspens are particularly vulnerable to fires; whereas the bark of most trees consists of dead cells, the aspen’s bark is a living, functioning tissue that—along with the rest of the tree—succumbs quickly (10) to fire.

The explanation is that each aspen, while appearing to exist separately as a single tree, is in fact only the stem or shoot of a far larger organism.A group of thousands of aspens can actually constitute a single organism, called a clone, that shares an interconnected root system and a unique set of genes. Thus, when one aspen—a single stem—dies, the entire clone is affected. While alive, a stem sends hormones into the root system to suppress formation of further stems. But when the stem dies, its hormone signal also ceases. If a clone (25) loses many stems simultaneously, the resulting hormonal imbalance triggers a huge increase in new, rapidly growing shoots that can outnumber the ones destroyed. An aspen grove needs to (30) experience fire or some other disturbance regularly, or it will fail to regenerate and spread.Instead, coniferous trees will invade the aspen grove’s borders and increasingly block out sunlight needed by the aspens.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

GWD5-Q35:

The primary purpose of the passage is to explain the

A.qualities that make a particular organism unique

B.evolutionary change undergone by a particular organism

C.reasons that a phenomenon benefits a particular organism

D.way in which two particular organisms compete for a resource

E.means by which a particular organism has been able to survive in a barren region

---------------------------------------------------------------------GWD5-Q36:

It can be inferred from the passage that when aspen groves experience a “disturbance” (line 30), such a disturbance

A.leads to a hormonal imbalance within an aspen clone

B.provides soil conditions that are favorable for new shoots

C.thins out aspen groves that have become overly dense

D.suppresses the formation of too many new aspen stems

E.protects aspen groves by primarily destroying coniferous trees rather than aspens

---------------------------------------------------------------------

GWD5-Q37:

The author of the passage refers to “the bark of most trees” (line 6) most likely in order to emphasize the

A.vulnerability of aspens to damage from fire when compared to other trees

B.rapidity with which trees other than aspens succumb to destruction by fire

C.relatively great degree of difficulty with which aspens catch on fire when compared to other trees

D.difference in appearance between the bark of aspens and that of other trees

benefits of fire to the survival of various types of trees

但是 contrary to B, A  怎么反呢? 这和下面的那个 Laos has a land....

(C) whether or not it has the capability to broaden its membership and can leave

额。。。。

C. a treatise that advocates women's equal political and legal rights.
D. a treatise advocating women's equal political and legal rights.
E a treatise that argued for equal political and legal rights for women.
原来是 划线后面 and for changes in the married women's property laws.

39. In 1527 King Henry VIII sought to have his marriage to Queen Catherine annulled so as to marry Anne Boleyn.

(D) developing rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin
(E) active feminist, Olive Chancellor, and the rivalry with her charming and cynical cousin Basil Ransom
最后 题目觉得 centers on sb, and the rivalry with sb's relatives 这样的形式好。

45. Quasars, at billions of light-years from Earth the most distant observable objects in the universe(这里怎么回事,同位语和状语放在一起呀。), believed to be the cores of galaxies in an early stage of development.
(A) believed to be

(E)and brought
1, 30, 47
OG认为 30 这题的protecting =explain the purposeof the items of military equipment
animal-hide shileds with wooden frames are essential items of military equipment, protecting warriors.
Someobe published her Discourse on women, a treatise that ........
但是 47 这里就是 explain the action in the main clause+ the action happend in the modifer happens in the same time as the action in the main clause.

48. In 1713, Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad, a work that, taking him seven years until completion, and that literary critic Samuel Johnson, Pope's contemporary, pronounced the greatest translation in any language.

(C) Josephine Baker made Paris her home long before to be an expatriate was fashionable
(D) Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker made Paris her home
(E) Long before it was fashionable being an expatriate, Paris was home to Josephine Baker
为什么C 不对呢, to be an expatriate was fashionable 本应该是这样的,但是这样不和英文的习惯,所以,应该变成 it is fashionable to be an expatriate.

53.The nineteenth-century chemist Humphry Davy presented the results of his early experiments in his “Essay on Heat and Light,” a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyle as well as a vision of a new chemistry that Davy hoped to found.

54. The report recommended that the hospital should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and use space in other hospitals.

(C) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and to use space in other hospitals
(D) eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and other hospitals’space used

(C) It can hardly be said that it is the fault of educators who have not anticipated the impact of microcomputer technology
(D) It can hardly be said that educators are at fault for not anticipating the impact of microcomputer technology
(E) The fact that educators are at fault for not anticipating the impact of microcomputer technology can hardly be said
不能将两个 it is that 摞在一起的。

59. The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the pugnacious states of the Greek world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed during the festival's month.
(A) world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed during the festival's month

(C)world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for the festival month
(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during the month of the festival
(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that was for the month of the festival
不是 festival's month, 而是 the month of festival.

60. While all states face similar industrial waste problems, the predominating industries and the regulatory environment of the states obviously determines the types and amounts of waste produced, as well as the cost of disposal.

(D) to establish tighter restrictions on the amount of grain capable of being grown by farmers and encouraging
(E) to establish tighter restrictions on the amount of grain farmers will be allowed to grow and to encourage
try and establish, 还是try to establish.

63. The yield of natural gas from Norway’s Troll gas field is expected to increase annually until the year 2005 and then to stabilize at six billion cubic feet a day, which will allow such an extraction rate at least for 50 years' production.

(D) 2005, then stabilizing at six billion cubic feet a day, allowing such an extraction rate for at least
(E) 2005, then stabilizing at six billion cubic feet a day, which will allow such an extraction rate for at least

(B) act like a buffer so as to absorb
(C) act as a buffer, absorbing
(D) acting as a buffer, absorbing

66. The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
(A) include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is
(B) include the animal known as the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long and
(C) include the animal known as the killer whale, growing up to 30 feet long and being
(D) includes the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow as big as 30 feet long and is
(E) includes the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and it is
                 65. a breakwater of rocks that would rise six feet above the waterline and act as a buffer, absorbing the energy. 再找that指代什么,就是a breakwater of rock了。
                66. The 32 species are closely related to whales and include the animal known as the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long....
the explaination of OG:  the participial growing might refer to the 32 species.
还有 1 C The Glass House Mountains in Queensland, Austrilia, were sighted in 1770 by the English navigator Captain James Cook, naming them suposedly since their sheer wet rocks glistened like glass.
OG expalination:  As the objects of a preposition and not the subject of the clause, James Cook does not work as the noun that that verbal phrase beginning with naming can describe;.

暴力一点的理解就是 A is B, protecting。

(E)cut into a 500-acre site at Tell Hamoukar, Syria, have yielded strong evidence that centrally administered complex societies in northern regions of the Middle East arose simultaneously with but

71. Unlike the original National Museum of Science and Technology in Italy, where the models are encased in glass or operated only by staff members, the Virtual Leonardo Project, an online version of the museum, encourages visitors to “touch” each exhibit, which thereby activates the animated functions of the piece.
(A) exhibit, which thereby activates
(B) exhibit, in turn an activation of
(C) exhibit, and it will activate
(D) exhibit and thereby activate

(E) exhibit which, as a result, activates
我觉得D不好, D潜台词是the Vitual Leonardo project activate.
OG 解释: it 不能指代动作 touch; D 项中隐含内容是 to activate 。

Combining enormous physical strength with higher intelligence, the Neanderthals appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path, but their relatively sudden disappearance during the Paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led to their extinction.

(B) appear to have been equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
(C) appear as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
(D) appeared as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
(E) appeared to have been equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
to have done.
this isn't a present perfect construction, because it's actually an infinitive.
i.e., it's not "they have been equipped"; it's "they appear TO HAVE been equipped".

in any case, you should probably just memorize this construction as a one-off idiomatic structure. if you say "they seemed/appeared to...", then, no matter how remote the event is (in time), you use this construction.

for instance:
it seems that the students cheated on the exam
(normal past tense in this construction)
but...
the students seem to have cheated on the exam
(not here)

i don't really have a good explanation for this, other than "i'm a writer with a firm command of formal english, and i know that it is so" and "you should just think of it as an idiom". sorry i can't do better than that
.

in any case, though, you DO have to use an infinitive after "appear" or "seem" in this sort of construction. and if you think about it, this is as past-tense as an infinitive can get. so that's why you have to use it.

74. A 1972 agreement between Canada and the United States reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump into the Great Lakes.
(A) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump
(B) reduced the phosphate amount that municipalities had been dumping
(C) reduces the phosphate amount municipalities have been allowed to dump
(D) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities are allowed to dump
(E) reduces the amount of phosphates allowed for dumping by municipalities
这样理解, the amount of phosphates that municipalities are allowed to dump 这个整体是一个宾语,而且说得就是一般事务,所以再用that 表示限制的时候可以用一般现在时。

75. A proposal has been made to trim the horns from rhinoceroses to discourage poachers; the question is whether tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rhinoceroses after their horns are trimmed.
(A) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rhinoceroses after their horns are
(B) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks to see one once their horns are
(C) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks to see rhinoceroses once the animals’horns have been

(D) if tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rhinoceroses once the animals’ horns are
(E) if tourists will continue to visit game parks to see one after the animals’ horns have been
不管是 a proposal has been made to trim the horms from rhinoceroroses to discourage, 还是后面换线 都是出现了to ..to..
to see 这个知识点上没有问题;
tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rhnoceroses after their horns are trimmed.
还可以, after 这个phrase 做see rhinoceroses 这个分句的时间状语,their 就是指代rhinocerouses.

这里的名词有 tourists, game parks and rhinoceroses. 但是和their horms make sense就只有 tourists and rhinocerouses 这两个东西。

Generally, present perfect indicates actions that started in the past and are still going on.

An alternative use of present perfect is for things that happened in the past but are still true or for things that have ongoing effects.

Some examples:
(1) We have visited Torino in November and found it lovely, though cold.
This doesn't mean we are still visiting, nor that it is still November. It just means that at least once, we did visit in November, and that history is still (and will forever be) true.

(2) I have attached the documents to this cover sheet.
This doesn't mean I am still stapling the papers as I write or as the sentence is read...it just means the documents are still attached.

In your OG example, "have been trimmed" should be interpreted in this way--the zoo employees may not still be trimming the horns, but the horns are still short.

76. Retailers reported moderate gains in their November sales, as much because of their sales of a year earlier being so bad as that shoppers were getting a head start on buying their holiday gifts.
(A) of their sales of a year earlier being so bad as that
(B) of their sales a year earlier having been as bad as because
(C) of their sales a year earlier being as bad as because
(D) their sales a year earlier had been so bad as because
(E) their sales of a year earlier were as bad as that

77. The only way for growers to salvage frozen citrus is to process them quickly into juice concentrate before they rot when warmer weather returns.
(A) to process them quickly into juice concentrate before they rot when warmer weather returns
(B) if they are quickly processed into juice concentrate before warmer weather returns to rot them
(C) for them to be processed quickly into juice concentrate before the fruit rots when warmer weather returns
(D) if the fruit is quickly processed into juice concentrate before they rot when warmer weather returns
(E) to have it quickly processed into juice concentrate before warmer weather returns and rots the fruit
to salvage 与 to process 这里的平行。
我要记住的是, to do is to do 这样的平行,也有这样被动式的infinite phrase 的平行,别一上来就是 to do is to do, 还可能是to do is to have it done.

(D) sloth, found in Puerto Rico in 1991, have been dated at 34 million years old, making the sloth the earliest known mammal on
(E) sloth which, found in Puerto Rico in 1991, was dated at 34 million years old, made the sloth the earliest known mammal of

我觉得 do =sell。

So, "and they have " means "and they have sell" (This full form will create a wrong tense here.)

The author falsely depends on gratuitous assumption that.... However, no evidence is stated in the argument to support this assumption. In fact, this is not necessarily the case. For example, it is more likely that.... Therefore, this argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility.

Either-Or choice
The author assumes that AA and BB are mutually exclusive alternatives and there is no room for a middle ground. However, the author provides no reason for imposing an either-or choice. Common sense tells us that adjusting both AA and BB might produce better results.

文章也承认了这点,但是 A 和B的成对出现,可能是A引起B, 也可能是B引起A。

2. conclusion, 就是要记住 must be true, 结论一定是对的。
3. strength and weaken 一定要围绕conclusion。
