The author of the reading text talks about the negative effects of present people reading less literature. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture does not agree with the author. She admits that it is true that people nowadays read less then people in the past, but it does not mean that this trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public.

First, contrary to the argument in the reading text that other forms of reading materials can not offer intellectual stimulation, the professor says that other forms of literature is equally meaningful. For example, other books about science, history, and political analysis are of high qualities. These books also can stimulate people' imaginations. According to the professor, no only
(没见过这种用法啊…) literature is good for people.

Second, the lecture refutes the idea that television or music is trivial and has lowered the standard of culture in general. The professor explain
(explains) that musics(music不可数吧~) and movies are good and beneficial to people. Listening to a music or watching a good movie will not lowered(lower) the standard of culture. The world is changing. These new forms are more direct than reading books.

Third, the professor also offers a different view with the author of the passage that present readers are the reason of less good literature. The real reason is that modern writers make their work difficult to understand. Readers in the past would not like to read these books either.

Do you agree or disagree,if you need to discuss upsetting orcontroversial problems with others you will use email or text messaging or youwould like to use telephone or voice messaging?

When it comes to the question of how to discuss upsetting or controversialproblems with others, people' choices
Some people prefer to use telephone or voice-messaging because of theirconvenience and instant.(这里应该用“,”就行,后面的while毕竟不能单独成句,只能做从句) While others would like to use e-mail or text messaging to revealtheir congitation (cogitation?) and preciseness.Generally speaking, upsetting or controversial problems often relate to serious topics. Therefore, from my point of view as a student, using e-mail or text messagingis a better choice to deal with this type of problems.

To begin with,
comapredcomparedwith speaking, writinggives people more time to do researches, to think deeply and thus can betterexplain their ideas. When confrontingwith upsetting or controversial problems, people need more time to copewith it. Writing e-mail or text massaging thus are the proper way to solve thistype of problems. On the contrary, using telephone or voice-messaging would causemore questions because of misunderstandings. For example, once our teachersgave us an assignment to talk about after class. The topic was whether moneyand power were the symbol of success. And we began immediately when the classwas over. However, none of us could presuade (persuade) othersto admit that they were right by only talking with each other. The reason wasthat the topic was so controversial. Also we did not have enough time to thinkabout it. Then, our teacher told us to write about the same topic, to arrangethe articles next week. Things became so much better next week when we broughtour writings to the classroom and read them. Thus, when confronting with someproblematic questions, it would be better to use writting (writing) toexpress you (your 其实我建议换成our)  ideas.
(感觉例子略长,可以简化一下,例如Andwe began immediately when the class was over.
Moreover, using e-mail or text messaging can avoid some disadvantages thatraised from telephone or voice messaging. People tend to behave more emotionalwhen they use telephone or voice messaging than
writting (writing). Their daily communicatins communication with others are speaking, so they adapt tothis type of way to express their thinking and emotions. When using audiomethods to express themselves, they will inevitablely (inevitably) band theiremotions in their expression. 。。。。)On the contrary (用过了,可以换成by contrast),when peopepeoplewrite something, theytend to be more fair and cool-headed. So, (可以换成As a result/ consequence, consequently, thereforehence, thus等等) when discussing upsetting or controversial problems, writting (writing) isa way to avoid personal prejudice in some degree.

Finally, writing is easy to arrange
after the discussion ending.(我觉得略微别扭, 是不是去掉ending) The process of discussion is important, as well as the conlusion (conclusion) ofit.  (我突然想可以不可以用So it is the same with the conclusion.) Ever from letter had been created, huamn (human)began to use them to rember(remember  其实 record会不会更好一点儿) things, to show theirthought, and to communicate wiht (with) others. Most of the materials used in modern classes relate to writing, so ((可以换成As a result/consequence, consequently, therefore等等)) , people arefamiliar with paperbased materials (没看懂) and have many ways to process the information of them.Furthermore, writting(writing, 可以换成typing, text等吧) is explicitand abstract. Therefore, it is easy to organize.

Of course, speaking is simultaneous and people can use oral presentationwhenever they have some good ideas about the problems. However, from what hasbeen discussed above,
I can safely draw the conclusion that the benefits ofe-mail or text messaging are so many. So, using writting (writing) is athoughtful choice. (不知道用since的既然之意会不会好一点, I can safely draw the conclusion thatwriting is a thoughtful choice since it owns so many benefits。)
To kch,

2010.2.13NA   Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In a team, those who do not accept other’s criticism cannot succeed. Use specific reasons to support your answer.

When it comes to the question of whether people can succeed if they do not accept other's criticism in a team, different people hold different opinions. Some people think those who do not accept other's criticism can succeed because of their confidence and courage. While others do not believe people who do not accept other's criticism can succeed as these people can not realize their mistakes then they lose the opportunities to change their mistakes. Personally, from my point of view as a student, and based on what I have learnt from others, I agree with the later choice. My reasons are as follows.

To begin with, people who can not accept other's criticism will fail because they do not realize their questions in the team. If they continue to make the same mistakes again and again, other members of the team may not trust them next time. For example, when I was in high school five years ago, one day my science teacher told the students to finish one experiment in groups. There were five students in my group, and Mike was one of our group members. When it came to one step of the experiment, Mike made the same mistake one day after another. The reason was that he did not understand the knowledge of this step. All of other group members told him that he had make a mistake but he did not accept our advice. He believed that he was correct and continued to insist to do the experiment as what he thought about.
Then, other members of our team decided to divide our group to two part and Mike was in the other part alone. It is obvious that Mike failed in the end. As you can see, one need to accept others advices if they want to succeed.

Moreover, another disadvantage of reject other's criticism is that this person can not work well with other members in the same team. This point is easy to understand. Once a team member always think he/she is right and others are all wrong, then no one will want to cooperate with him/her. Such as when people playing football in the playground. All of the members need to cooperate with other members in order to succeed. Then if one member makes a mistake, other members will be impacted by the member who makes mistakes. If the football player continue to make the same mistake, then other members will not pass him/her the ball any more. In this situation, this player can not succeed without other teammates' help.

Finally, people who do not accept other's criticism will lose opportunities to success. If people do not accept other people' criticism, they will lose the chances to contact with others. Thus then other people have some information, they would not want to share these information with these people. People incline to do something with others who have similar background and want to change when others point out these mistakes for them.

Of course, sometimes other's criticism may not be correct. Also other's criticism may be based on prejudice. However, most of the time, other's criticism is beneficial to help us realize our mistakes. Therefore, from what I have discussed above, I firmly believe that people who can not accept other's criticism cannot succeed.

2010.3.6NASome people believe that people should follow their ambitious dreams and goals even they are not realistic; others believe that people should focus on achieving realistic goals. What’s your opinion and why? Use specific reasons to support your answer.

When it comes to the question of which goal to choose-realistic goals or unrealistic goals, different people hold different opinons. Some people prefer to do something that others never imagined before and just follow their heart even they are not realistic in others views, while other people are more practical and they wouuld love to focus on achieving realistic goals. Personally, from my point of view as a student, also based on what I have leart from others, I agree with the first point. My reasons are as follows.

To begin with, following ambitous dreams and goals makes people feel fulfilled. People incline to do things which they interest in and they are more excite when they follow their dreams. For example, when I was in primary school, one of my classmates said that he wanted to be the chairman of China. All of other students laughed at him, they thought his dream would never come ture under corrent situation. However, he firmly believed that he could be able to accomplish his dream some day. He worked hard every day and learnt a lot from other people who were officiers before. This made him feel fulfilled in his daily life. Finally, he became a goverment officer after he greduated from university. He told me his life was meaningful as he became nearer and nearer to his dream.

Moreover, the development of the world needs people who are courage enough to persue ambitious dreams and goal that are not realistic. This point is obvious. Just hundreds of years ago, people at that time might think fly in the air as a dream which would never come ture. While present people can use planes and also spacecrafts. These instruments help people both travel through the air and transport people to the outer space such as the moon. In this case, new ideas or dreams is needed by society and human development.

Finally, achieving dreams makes one's life colorful. Can you endure your daily life is full of realistic goals? When you come to your workplace, what you think about is only money and how to finish your work. When you come home, the only topic of your family is realistic goal. All of these are so boring. When we focus on achieving realistic goals, life is like a one way street. On the contrary, dreams bring us imagiantions and make our lives more colorful. I remember that when I was little, my grandfather told me about some mysterious stories about the sky. Such as the story about MilkyWay, it was created by some gods lived in the outer space. I wondered about the story and wanted to learn more about it when I grow up. This experience make my childhood colorful.

Of couse, people have to achieve realistic goals in order to survive. These goals are the foundation of people’ daily life such as houses and food. However, persuing our dreams and goals help us feel fulfilled and also contribute to the progress of our society. Thus, I prefer to follow my heart and concentrate my energy to make my dreams come true.

When it comes to the question of whether people can succeed if they do not accept other's criticism in a team, different people hold different opinions. Some people think those who do not accept other's criticism can succeed because of their confidence and courage.
While others do not believe people who do not accept other's criticism can succeed as these people can not realize their mistakes then they lose the opportunities to change(?? 换个词,correct) their mistakes(此句可精简:While others hold the opposite opinion because they believe that people will miss the opportunities to correct their mistakes if they turn a deaf ear to other’s opinions. Personally, from my point of view as a student, and based on what I have learnt from others, I agree with the later(应为: latter ) choice(好吗? My reasons are as follows.

To begin with, people who can not accept other's criticism will fail because they do not
realize their questions(歧义!questions 改为 problems in the team. If they continue to make the same mistakes again and again(over and over agian), other members of the team may not trust them next time. For example, when I was in high school five years ago, one day my science teacher told the students to finish one(an) experiment in groups. There were five students in my group, and Mike was one of our group members. When it came to one step of the experiment, Mike made the same mistake one day after another(??? 是否应为: like what he did days before? The reason was that he did not understand the knowledge of this step. All of other group members told him that he had make a mistaketold him about his mistakebut he did not accept our advice. He believed that he was correct and continued to insist to do the experiment as what he thought about.
Then, other members of our team decided to divide our group
to(into) two parts and Mike was in the other part alone. It is obvious that Mike failed in the end. As you can see, one need to accept others advices if they want to succeed. For example, I used to finish an experiment with my group members in high school, and Mike was our team member. He made same mistakes over and over again on one step of the experiment, which was his responsibility. Though we had told him times about his problems, however, he turned a deaf ear to it. So finally, we decided to divide the group into two parts, one of which was Mike himself alone. As you can see, he failed in the end. In this way, it’s of importance to listen to other’s advice to improve one’s own ability.

Moreover, another disadvantage of
reject (rejecting) other's criticism is that this person can not work well with other members in the same team. This point is easy to understand. Once a team member always think he/she is right and others are all wrong, then no one will want to cooperate with him/her. Such as when people playing football in the playground (Take the soccer team for example. All of the members need to cooperate with other members in order to succeed. Then if one memberplayer makes a mistake, other members(players) will be impacted by the member(him) who makes mistakes. If the football player (he) continues to make the same mistake, then other members will not pass him/her the ball any more (anymore). In this situation, this player can not succeed without other teammates' help.

Finally, people who do not accept other's criticism will lose opportunities to success. If people do not accept other people' criticism, they will lose the chances to contact with others. Thus then other people have some informationEven if others have useful information, they would not want to share these information with these people. People incline to do something with others who have similar background and want to change(何意???) when others point out these mistakes for them.

The author of the reading text talks about several reasons that the subject of one painting is Jane Austen. In contrast, the professor in the lectue does not agree with the author, he says that none of the evidences in the reading are convincing.

First, Austen's family authoried the letter seventy years after Austen's death. As a result, no body of her family members had seen Austen. This directly contradict its counterpart in the reading text.

Second, unlike what has been said in the reading text that the portraint dipicted Austen, the professor argues that its subject might be one of Austen's distance female relatives. Austen's relatives resembled her fact to some extent. This casts doubt on the evidence in the reading text.

Third, in contrast to what the author states in the passage that the style of the portrait links to Ozias Humphrey, the professor points out that the girl in the painting was younger than Austen at that time. The reason of the professor is that one businessman in London began to sell convass to when Austen was twenty-seven years old. Also, the girl in this painting is unlikely to be Austen herself. Thus, this portrait could not be Austen, according to the professor.

The author of the reading text talks about several disadvantages of private collection of fossils. On the contrary, the professor does not agree with the author, she says that the advantages of private collection are outweigh the disadvantages.

First, the professor says that commercial hunting of fossils give public great exposure to the fossils, not less. Private collectors can sold their fossils to some low-income public institutions such as school and library. This will make the fossils display to public more frequently than before. This directly contradicts its counterpart in the passage.

Second, unlike what has said that scientists will lose chance to see some important fossils, the professor states that scientists may not miss anything important about these fossils. The reason is that it is scientists who examine and text those valuable fossils and identify them. Thus, those precious fossils must pass through scientists first before they are collected by private collectors.

Third, the professor points out one fact that there are not enough university operations and scientific institutions to discover the fossils which hiden underground. It is better to unearth these fossils with some slight damages than let them undiscovered in the ground.

To begin with, following ambitous dreams and goals makes people feel fulfilled. People incline to do things which they interest in and they are more excite(d)when they follow their dreams. For example, when I was in primary school, one of my classmates said that he wanted to be the chairman of China. However, he firmly believed that he could be able to accomplish his dream some day. He worked hard every day and learnt a lot from other people who were officiers before. This made him feel fulfilled in his daily life. Finally, he became a goverment officer after he greduated(graduated) from university. He told me his life was meaningful as he became nearer and nearer to his dream.(我还以为真是主席呢 哈哈)

Moreover, the development of the world needs people who are courage(courageous?) enough to persue ambitious dreams and goal that are not realistic. This point is obvious. Just hundreds of years ago, people at that time might think fly in the air as a dream which would never come ture(true). While present people can use planes and also spacecrafts.

The author of the reading text talks about several disadvantages of private collection of fossils. On the contrary, the professor does not agree with the author,
she says(又出现两个谓语句子并列而无关联词的状况了~ 此处用: saying 即可) that the advantages of private collection are(应去掉) outweigh the disadvantages.

First, the professor says that commercial hunting of fossils give
s public great exposure to the fossils, not less. Private collectors can sold(应为:sell 错别字!) their fossils to some low-income public institutions such as school and library. This will make the fossils display to public more frequently than before. This directly contradicts its counterpart in the passage.

Second, unlike what has said that scientists will lose chance to see some important fossils, the professor states that scientists may not miss anything important about these fossils.

Third, the professor points out one fact that there are not enough university operations and scientific institutions to discover the fossils which
hiden(错别字!)underground. It is better to unearth these fossils with some slight damages than let them undiscovered in the ground.

The author of the reading text talks about several advantages of salvage logging. In contrast, the professor in the lecture does not agree with the author's opinion, and she says that these benefits are questionable.

First, unlike to what has said in the text that the removing of dead trees will help forest to recover, the professor argues that this may cause damages to the development of the forest. She states that the decomposition of dead trees can enrich the soil, and provide nutrient to the trees in the forest. If the dead trees are all removed, new trees may lack necessary nutrient for growth.

Second, the author says that removing of dead trees helps to reduce insects infestation, while the professor points out that this is not the real situation. The spruce bark beetle have lived in the froest for hundreds of years and they did not cause big damage. Furthermore, decaying wood attracts birds and other insects which are beneficial to the healthy development of the forest. More importantly, removing rotting wood would do more harm than insects do. Therefore, the benefit of salvage logging is unsounded in this case.

Third, the professor explain that removing dead trees of some severely damaged forest needs helocopters and other expensive vehicles. So it is expensive to remove these dead trees. Also, the economic benefits of salvage logging is small and temporary. Meanwhile, the workers are most coming from other places,  but not the native communities, because these workers have more experiences and trainning. As a result, the benefits offered in the reading text is totally rejected by the professor.
