Thank you, greattaste! Can you explain why BW ranking of Yale drops sharply this year? Why both recruiters and students didn't give a good score? Thanks
Sure. BTW, thanks for asking this question in such a nice way.
Reasons we think of so far are:
1. From student's perspective:
On one hand, SOM has a very diversified student body, and therefore, lots of career switchers. Many students who have non-traditional background, however, had a hard time to find good jobs in a bad economy (2003 - 2004). On the other hand, the school has a high-profile student body (you can see from average GMAT, selectivity...) I have many classmates graduating from Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, Dartmouth, U Penn. Princeton, Yale college, etc. That being said, It's not easy to get goods scores from people who have really high expectations.
2. From the recruiter's perspective.
Founded in 1976, SOM changed its degree from Master in Public and Private Management (MPPM) to MBA in 1998, which means we have a small alum base in business (for-profit) sector. Recruiters may tend to give high scores to a school which has sent many alum to their firms.
Reaction of the school:
Both students and the administration are disappointed about the ranking. As a young program, SOM is trying hard to find out the reasons behind (the dean will speak to class of 2004 students, BW editors and recruiters) and the administration is going to put together a plan to improve its long-term grounding.
On last Tuesday the dean called for a community meeting to discuss the ranking with students. He says the school will not change its strategy, mission and culture. But there are certainly some areas to improve. The priorities for SOM are:
1. Strengthen the career development office and bring more recruiters on campus.
2. Strengthen the leadership/organization behavior wing (general management/strategy) of the school in addition to finance, bringing in more stellar faculty specialized in these areas.
In the long-run, SOM is planning to build a new campus and increase the class size slightly in the near future.
