OG中解释D说："do must be omitted" 为什么呢？

比如：
1）Tom requires less medication than Jerry does.
2）Tom gains weight more quickly than Jerry does.
这两个句子中的"does"有什么错呢？
我觉得第一句要是没有does就有歧义。第二句没有does还可以理解，但是有does也没错啊。

感觉问题不是出在do上面，而是d的时态整个就是混乱的。
they have required less medication and will gain weight more quickly than do
并且，do不应该是will或者 have吗？
