112.    Domestic automobile manufacturers have invested millions of dollars into research to develop cars more gasoline-efficient even than presently on the road.

(A) into research to develop cars more gasoline-efficient even than presently on the road

(B) into research for developing even more gasoline-efficient cars on the road than at present

(C) for research for cars to be developed that are more gasoline-efficient even than presently the road

(D) in research to develop cars even more gasoline-efficient than those at present on the road

(E) in research for developing cars that are even more gasoline-efficient than presently on the road

Choice D, the best answer, uses the preposition than to compare two clearly specified and grammatically parallel terms, the cars the manufacturers hope to develop and those at present on the road. In A, the phrase more gasoline-efficient... than presently on the road does not identify the second term of the comparison. In B, the misuse of modifying phrases produces an ambiguous and awkward statement: even more gasoline-efficient cars could refer either to more cars that are efficient or to cars that are more efficient. Choices B, C, and E all use research for [verb] where the idiom requires research to [verb]. In addition, C awkwardly separates even from more, and C and E again fail to indicate the second term of the

这个问题一直就没搞懂,现在终于冒出来了。为什么这里的than后面就能省,112题中就不能省???还是说,这题也能省,只是不省更好。

Very good question!!!

我也想知道为什么在OG112里面不能省略,携隐的解释好像缺乏说服力啊,举个反例如大全652:

Since the movie was released seventeen UFOs have been sighted in the state, which is more than had been sighted in the past ten years together.

(A) which is more than had been sighted

(B) more than had been sighted

(C) more than they had sighted

(D) more than had reported sightingsB

(E) which is more than had reported sightings

为什么这里的UFOs又省掉了呢?

恩, 就我目前的理解, 这个补出似乎没有太多的规律可循, 还是放眼其它的错误吧.

这是破折号用法摘自"How to prepare for the California state university writing proficiency exams")

Dash:

The main function of the dash, like parentheses, is to enclose emphasized information within a sentence. Dashes are more forceful and should be used sparingly, since they high-light the ideas and items they enclose.

Use dashes to indicate hesitation, or a sudden break in thought or sentence structure, or to set off appositives and other explantory or parenthetical elments. The dash adds emphasis to any part of a sentence that can be separated from the rest of the sentence.

Example: The skydriver--in spite of his broken leg--set a new record for endurance.

Some specific uses of the dash follow:

  1. To interrupt continuity of prose

Example:  "I really can't tolerate--Well, never mind."

2. To emphasize appositives

Example: The items she had asked for in the new car--tape deck, mileage computer, stick shift--were all included.

3. To set off phrases or clauses containing commas.

When a modifier itself contains commas, dashs can make its boundaries clear.

Example: General Motors--which has manufactured tanks, cannons, and mobile cranes--has always been far more than an automobile assembler.

4. To set off parenthetical elements

Example: The child was sitting--actually sprawling--at his desk.

According to the definition above, I support "B",because "dash" here expresses emphasis,对应 only.

以下是引用tulipmontreal在2004-7-3 18:27:00的发言:

National Geographic documentaries and movies such as "Jaws"
have fed people's fears of shark attacks for decades...fears
of the Great White Shark.

Such fears, however, are largely unfounded.  According to
Nature Publishing Group, "Only seven people this century have
been killed by the Great White Shark, the man-eater of the
movies -- fewer than the number killed by bee stings
."

B非常正确!

B 和这里的举例好像有明显的区别吧? 这里有the number, 而B中明显没有啊!没有the number, 是否会令B的比较物不具有可比性呢?还是,这里省略了主语?

请大家纠正!

我觉得这里是第二个用法。但是dash的使用我觉得和,which一样,应该紧跟前面要进一步解释的东西,而B里面却是跟在the man-eater of the movies后面,会让人产生歧义。而E就不会,the man-eater of the movies,是同位语,后面明显fewer than the ones killed by bee stings是跟前面分句的,而不是man-eater of the movies,从而不会有歧义。

大家看呢?

E的fewer than和seven people离这么远,中间还有同位语相隔,怎么是明显跟前面分句的呢??在我看来,用破折号排除歧义的可能性要大一些
