NYC and Bay Area are different from most areas in US. NYC's average annual income can reach $140,000, while that of the total nation might only fall in $30,000 -$40,000. SF's average income is probably about $80,000. However, as many of the president candidates addressed, if your income is higher than $90,000, you are already in the above 6%.
This part I have some different opinions with. Why do you say Chinese are underpaid in US? Only if the company sponsors H1B visa, the package you receive is the same as your US peers. Employment law abandons such discrimination. Also, you can even bargain for a higher pay than your US peers if you have more relevant working experience or graduated from a top school.
