Main point: Explain and examine the uses of dispersants for marine oil slicks and conclude that need to be more consideration of dispersants
Paragraph 1:
- Chemicals dispersants harm corals > the off harms corals
- Chemicals dispersants should be used near reefs only when oil approaches the shoreline
Paragraph 2:
- In many cases, the first option is cleaning up oil spills mechanically
- Only when weather conditions are rough or slick wash up the shore, dispersants are the next option
- Dispersants break oil up into droplets -> oil droplets sink can contaminate coral
Paragraph 3:
- Dispersants kill branching corals and retard their growth
- Corals do better when exposed to oil than dispersed oil droplets
Paragraph 4:
- 3 groups of corals test in the lab: corals + crude oil, corals + dispersants + oil, corals + dispersants, to measure coral survival and growth for 50 days
- After 1 week, corals in tank 1 survive, the rest all died
- After 50 days, surviving corals in tank 1 continued to grow, and the rest experienced retarded growth
Paragraph 5:
- The test results contradict the rule that dispersants are less toxic than oil droplets
- Need to be more consideration of dispersants
- Also highlighted that under real conditions corals may not be exposed to dispersants in the same amount and for the same duration
