Language Matters
The importance of language occasionally features in discussions in the forum, and that prompts me to further elaborate on the point. Language matters from one's applications to PhD programs (assessing a candidate's language skills is one of the purposes that the interview process serves) to her journey through a program and to her whole career thereafter. For the sake of convenience, I distinguish between 'academic language' and 'everyday language'. Generally, one can become sufficiently versed in the former through both long-term, sustained exposure to research literature and practice in the process of engaging in research. In contrast, fluency in the latter is not easily accomplished for many of us. Above all, it is essential that one develop a positive mindset toward learning the language, which in turn fires up her motivation to learn it. In practice, interacting with native speakers of the language, reading newspapers and magazines, watching television, and even participating in social media are all necessary ingredients for mastery in 'everyday language'. |
