Language Matters

The importance of language occasionally features in discussions in the forum, and that prompts me to further elaborate on the point. Language matters from one's applications to PhD programs (assessing a candidate's language skills is one of the purposes that the interview process serves) to her journey through a program and to her whole career thereafter. For the sake of convenience, I distinguish between 'academic language' and 'everyday language'. Generally, one can become sufficiently versed in the former through both long-term, sustained exposure to research literature and practice in the process of engaging in research. In contrast, fluency in the latter is not easily accomplished for many of us. Above all, it is essential that one develop a positive mindset toward learning the language, which in turn fires up her motivation to learn it. In practice, interacting with native speakers of the language, reading newspapers and magazines, watching television, and even participating in social media are all necessary ingredients for mastery in 'everyday language'.

The Many Facets of Placements

No placements are the same for a plethora of reasons. Among them is the racial dimension, which is the focus here. Americans, or generally native speakers of English, have "innate" advantages in the job market over their counterparts from China, Korea, and other countries where English is a foreign language. This is especially the case for concentrations that have a high level of affinity with the humanities, including organizational behavior, human resources management, and behavioral Marketing. As a matter of fact, Americans or native speakers of English account for an insubordiate number of the 'outliers' that occur among Tier 4 and Tier 5 schools in our Placement Rankngs.

I will expand on the posting later.

请问楼主UIUC、Minnesota的Finance项目怎么样

These are very close peers. UIUC Finance is stronger than Minnesota to certain extent in terms of research. However, the latter is stronger than the former placement-wise. If I were you, I would go with Minnesota.

I hope you have opted for Iowa State, which has received rave reviews in the forum for its endeavour to place students at research schools. As for the other two, your best bet would be a so-called 'balanced' school.

Basically, all of Tier 1 and Tier 2 schools in our Placement Rankings have faculty strengths in empirical AP, such as Berkeley, Columbia, Duke, Ohio State, Emory, and Florida.

I would recommend that we set higher standards for evaluating postings to be "cream of the crop" (literally), "flagship", or "most valuable". It has come to my attention that certain of such postings have subsequently been heavily edited.
