The University of Chicago MBA taking questions

Dear Chicago GBS MBAs

would like to consult you two questions:

1) I applied for round 2 but up to now, the status for test score is still showing "no"! tried to call in for a few times and always be transfered to a tele-phone with nobody answering! If I would like to write in for query, is there any specific person I would direct to?

2) is the admission on a rolling base?

look forward to hearing from you...

I didn't know that small secret when I applied!

A little reminder: should be "Chicago GSB"...careful when you write to the admissions office

hi, wwwzzz and skypacerzhou:

thank you for your informative posts, and i found them really helpful.

i was admitted in the first round, and i would like to have your take on my job prospects in GSB.

i am 30 years old with 8 w/e as gov official on international trade regulation. undergraduate in economics and graduate in business law. frankly speaking, i know my back ground may lead to a job as a consultant, and that is also my plan for the post mba. upon the admission of Chicago, i developed an inpulse for the banking jobs. as my background is only remotely related to the finance, do you think the idea of a late career transfer into banking will be unrealistic? or the banking is too big an area for job discription, maybe there are some less exprerience oriented sectors in the area which is easier to break into? and will a CFA mitigate some of my negatives in the job hunting?

thank you very much. i have been obsessed by this for quite a time and hope to have your educated opinions on that.

Hi welcome, haremoftec! Are you in US? Hope you are planning to come to the Admit Weekend on March 4-5.

Actually many people are around 30 when they choose to change jobs through b-school. Consulting and banking are very different career paths that both need a lot of preparation and networking efforts. So having a focus is a good strategy to start with, even before b-school. Very few people successfully land jobs in both categories (though some "niu ren's" do get offers in both).

There's a third career option you might consider, i.e. general management or strategic planning jobs in a large corporation. One of my classmates with similar government background just landed a fantastic corporate job in a global management program. Of course, everything will depend on your interests, and now you have plenty of time to really think about what you want, and try to plan before fall quarter begins, cuz by then you will find so many things happening at the same time (studies, company presentations, social, extracirricular...) that it will be hard to concentrate on "meditating" your future.

Getting into banking would be feasibible for you, especially if you have a quant-heavy undergraduate degree, and very good English communications skills with native speakers (start practices now if you feel you still need some improvement). As for consulting, a high GMAT score (>=750) will be of some help, and similiarly, spoken English.

If you want, please drop me a short message with your e-mail address and I'll try to get you in touch with some of banking guys here. We will be more than willing to help.

hi, wwwzzz:

glad to have your prompt response. I am not in US. The admit weekend may not be an option for me. But GSB has done a good job in keeping every admit in the loop by sending out handy brochures and weekly emails.

Thanks for sharing the information on the grounds there. I understand that the GSB experience would change everything you had on your mind before joining the school, as your interests are influenced by how much you understand about the industries. but as a guy at 30, i have more practical things to worry than the interests. as a recognized finance guru, I think Chicago might pitch you best against other job hunters if you focus on the finanical side of the curriculum. Actually, i am about to start the preparation of CFA soon, and willing to make some sacrifice on the interests if the job prospect suggests otherwise.

Thank you very much for your offer to help. I will be happy to get into contact with banking guys there, but only hope that an old geek ignorant on finance like me will not run their patience up too fast. :-)  please contact me at reachhare(A) hotmail.com.

BTW, really surprised that my lowish GMAT will still be hunting me after Bschool!

Come on, have faith in yourself! If you think you are "an old geek ignorant on finance", then you are pissing off too many people at GSB (because most of us are like this!) ;-) I'll pass your e-mail to the banking guys.

Also, sorry if I misled you with the comments on GMAT. A high score is a "better-to-have", not a "must". Relax.
