I think campus visiting and direct interview with admission director is certainly helpful to get you off waitlist. One of my friends did so and he succeeded.
The school waitlisted you, because they like you, but have some concerns. You need to dig out what their concern is. Then you can subtly adress it to them through face2face talk. Usually, their concern is the individul-school fit. You need to show your passion and comittment to this school.

I just received a email from the ad com asking me to clarify some points about my goal and add some information on why GSB in a form of essay as well as a recommendation. As you said, I think they give me another chance to explain more about myself in particular my passion about GSB.
