Kellogg Or Wharton for Finance PhD

lz虽然终极目标不是学术，但是lz说了至少要在美国做到assoc以后再回国，这就要求在美国有一个好的placement。记住phd不是mba, 你phd学校的所谓名声远远没有 1.你自己的人脉关系 and 2.你担任教职工作的学校名声重要。要做好这两点，必须要在phd时和老师好好合作，好好利用advisor来打下人脉的基础。如果你的advisor不好好推你而是一封letter了事，你就算是mit也不会有好的placement. 所以，如果lz phd毕业以后想至少在学术圈混上一段时间， preferably until after tenure, 那么kellogg是一个logical的选择。wharton在care学生方面做得远远不如kellogg, 你看一下wharton历年来onmarket 的学生，为什么基本上所有人都是一个advisor??? 我看wharton每年招的学生quality绝对够强，每个人在chicago, mit, etc 都不会差，但在那么大的faculty size里如果还找不到advisor, 证明老师从来没有把学生当成future colleagues, 而是more of a cheap labor, or simply, just student. Again, a phd is not an MBA, successfully work with and leverage on faculty and advisor才是以后成功的基础。

而且现在Kellogg mba 在中国人脉也牛的不行了。不要忘了Winston Wen 太子哦。

你现在又这么好的一个机会，你以后也想做一个有名望的学者。
你应该多多考虑你的社会责任，你能为中国做点什么。
如果只是想着自己个人的金钱得失，

Haha, OP you've been quite active on a number of boards now - ranging from Test magic, Econ Job rumors and now Chase Dream. I have a somewhat similar choice to make (Chicago v MIT), though I've worked in industry. I would actually recommend that you gain some industry experience first if your ultimate goal is to work at a hedge fund. That'll help you really understand what you're passionate about  / good at and also help with your choice of school. Did you ever consider working at a top IB / PE / HF for a few years between undergrad and PHD?

Grossman is definitely an outlier. Not everybody can become Grossman. Can you become an AP at year 21 in Stanford?

谢谢楼上，中欧长江好像都很牛，给的比美国还多（但黄明这样不是全职的）。top10夸张了吧，国内一向都是小姐脾气丫鬟命。清北好像还没有能招到top20的金融phd吧。反正在他们的web上我没查到（光华，经管）。主要应该还是钱给不上来，和经济系一样40来万怎么招人。人家还不如随便找个业界的工作呢。重赏之下才有勇夫。

我不觉得Fund和paper是互斥的。Grossman有hedge fund，照样是超级学者。美国很多教授也有自己的hedge fund，做consulting，也很active。总之还是要增强自己的水平，idea啊。大家加油吧。哈哈

谢谢谢谢大家。I am already leaning towards kellogg when I first posted, and now I am basically settled. I know a Chinese two years ago turned down wharton for UCLA, whom I met at the UCLA visit day. The 'brand' name change from W to K is nothing compared to the change from W to UCLA. Well, I do need a great start to get a good placement and launch an academic career. 回国以后不能在学术上不进入一流的那一批人当中啊，那就玩不开了。

I also think Chicago is better than MIT. But this year apparently none of the 8 job market candidate at Chicago made it to top25 schools. The best candidate went to Wash U. So I think if you get into any of the top schools, its reallly is up to you to deliver a good work. I didn't know edog went to HMS for undegrad. So if edog comes from MIT for undergrad, it may make sense to go back and get started on research early. (Chicago get the best students on this planet, but I heard rumors that Chicago's environment is also alittle cold (of course, nothing like wharton), so between MIT and Chicago is better to find your match.

I was told by faculties at Wharton, Duke and Kellogg that the best placement was Wash U. And all those programs were happy that they "beat" chicago this year on job market. So I guess it should be somewhat accurate (maybe you meant some had flyouts to yale and NYU? Or maybe since have changed since I visited those schools last week). But yes usually Chicago send more than one guy to top 10 every year.

(can edog confirmed this? you are a insider lol)

Honestly I wish Chicago just destroyed everyone this year, that way I have a marginally higher chance getting off my waitlist at the other school,
