老夫聊发少年狂：大伯级MBA APPLICANT求定位！

我想年龄本身不应该成为障碍，但该结论只有资源充足的时候才成立。
想当年（80～90初）出国的中国人，很多年龄很大了，还在美国创业，读书改行，有不少人成功了。那是因为当时在美国“大陆中国人”就是稀缺资源，对他们来说有足够的机会可以利用。
现在，很难了。以前吃香的国际背景不是很管用了。除非有一个新的革命性的进步可以影响全球经济，目前的趋势，各国的社会都很明显的走向了沉淀与保守，既得利益者愈发稳定。现在不管是中国美国欧洲日本，讲究的是根正苗红，讲究的是走错一步路，人生机会以几何数级减少。
lz也是成功人士了，努力把自己的事业做大，也是个很好的事情啊。如果对投资感兴趣，想做asset management，可以拿钱去琢磨炒股，成为下一个段永平也可以。根本不用读什么MBA，MBA教的东西浅薄无比，主要是social skills和networking。

说的是。MBA读书，有钱，也不管毕业就业的，去读没问题的。你可以得到好的学位，看看眼界，长点知识。回来继续做生意，做大做好。

要看看你想从MBA得到的东西，是不是这个program真的能给你的。我们每个人去读的目的不同，从中得到的东西也不同。

41 years old is almost impossible to be accepted to top 10 business schools. I think your goal is unrealistic if you are trying to break into asset management at such age. There are plenty of applicants with higher GMAT, younger, hungrier than you gets dinged everyday.

But that's just my opinion, you are certainly welcome to try.

MBA is for people who want to switch careers or enhance their careers.  You definitely CANNOT play the "switch career" card.  Jobs in finance are tough now and for years to come.  So right now for the people who want to do post-MBA finance career, the "finance programs" tend to look for people with previous finance experience.  Taking a career switcher is risky... and taking a 40+ year old switcher is extremely risky.

You will have to play the "I want to expand my network" "improve my soft skills" "return to my previous job to enhance my career" card.  Throughout your application you will need to show adcom the value you will ADD to the MBA program you are applying (whether it's your entrepreneur background, management skills, ability to hire people with your company, ability to succeed after your MBA program, etc).

Now talking about the "age friendly schools."  My thoughts go to Yale, Duke, Cornell, Kellogg, Tuck, Berkeley, maybe Wharton (notice Wharton has a new dean who wants to have younger applicants and they reduced avg age from 29 to 28 for class of '10 to '11).  The "finance schools" tend to take younger people.

Since this “TOP-MBA-THING” is my big decision, I would rather set myself in the bright as much as I could. No offence was meant, Based on what you talk above, some questions are stirred up. Would you mind throw some lights here?

1．        How do you know so much about applying for a TOP-MBA? Have you been on getting ready for a long time?

2．        Do you pick up such information by doing homework on your own or just from the words out on the street?

3．        On the "age friendly schools" wise, your recommendation is Yale, Duke, Cornell, Kellogg, Tuck, Berkeley and maybe Wharton. Based on my background, age and score, how much chance do I get for each of schools? Give me your plain shot, plz.

4．        How about NYU stern? Do I get any chance to break through?  Honestly, It’s location, reputation in the circle and tight-crew tradition really drag me into it. it’s my No.1 choice

5．        Any other suggestions? Dont be shy, brother. Anything will do.

Again, if these questions sting you a bit in any way around, plz let me know. You will have all the apology from the bottom of my heart.

从前朋友谈起他念EMBA的经历，上课都是十足的，不仅仅是拉拉关系、镀镀金。相反，因为学生们都是有工作的，不需要花时间找工作，而且学费昂贵，大家都很认真上课。

上面cow兄说的一点有理，我也觉得楼主要是打算做个career switcher，这个年龄非常不合适。我虽然还没有读MBA，但是有些理解和想法我们可以一起探讨。

首先MBA没什么光环。进去读，2年的辛苦是可想而知的。商学院虽然要包装自己的产品（毕业生），当然也考虑到他们出去后的能力和表现，反过来将来会影响学校的声誉和alumni的网络质量。但是知识不是只有MBA里面可以学。MBA提供另外2个方面的收获，高质量的同学，和学校的网络。如果这3方面都是你想要的，那么去读MBA没错。

第二，考虑你除了读书，还考虑毕业后的就业，不是吗？就业时候，不是你觉得学了多少，和网络好就可以带给你自己想要的工作的。如果楼主会和我等一样，毕业以后硬碰硬在市场上找工作，那么你的年龄会是用人单位很考虑的问题。如果你是career switcher，打算44才开始入行做finance，你觉得用人单位会招你，还是招34岁的，假设你们一样是MBA。

这是一个很现实的问题。如果只是要转行finance，你考虑过读finance的硕士嘛？这样的program里专业课程更全面，你的投资可能相对小。毕业后尽量招个finance相关工作，就好。

总之，申请top MBA未必不中，但是你是否真要去做，是要仔细考虑的。毕竟生活是自己的，选择什么最合适，还要自己决定。
