about career goal

Hi Jason,
I submitted application to a school in HK stating general management as my career goal in essays. But this school is actually a "finance" school - more than half of the graduates go to finance industry, and because of the location - HK has plenty finance jobs. I got the interview and i'm considering whether I should say I have changed my career goal to finance industry or insist with the original one. If I change, will they think I haven't got a mature thought? If remain, but why should I choose this school to help me? Is it possible for me to get a GM job in HK?
Thanks..

I suggest that for you to even be thinking that 1) Wharton is "finance" only and 2) that HK is also "finance" only may be a bigger reflection of your (potential lack of) maturity level. When I applied, I said I wanted to work in the Media, in Singapore. That is FAR HARDER than what you are suggesting, since 1) Wharton is a lot more GM than Media 2) There is a lot more GM than Media in Singapore. So according to your standards I would have been in trouble.

But I wasn't.

I recommend that you not make rash decisions trying to guess what we want to see, but instead focus on what you truly want. Right now you are probably very anxious and very concerned pre-Interview. But I would focus on reading your own essays, remembering why you wrote them in the first place (you must have done something right, or you wouldn't get an interview invite) and have faith in yourself. Most applicants screw up when they try to write or tell us what they think we are looking for. When really, what we are looking for is your own honest answer.

Good luck.

About Lauder

Hi Jason, you addressed your response to jishi>, but I will assume it is to me.
So yes, I am going to schedule my OPI as soon as I get more feedback from you.  I came earlier than she did, at age 10.  But I have been extremely interested in Chinese, probably just like you, and kept it up throughout my life(family, college courses, professional networking).  So my colloquial ability in regular conversation near native, some people can tell I am not, some can't.  My writing and reading is a bit lacking though. And also my speaking ability in a professional setting is not as sooth as in everyday conversation.

How can I maximum my chance of getting in.  What do I need to do on the OPI?  I have also written the essays already.

-best,

It seems like you would be a case-by-case. Go do the OPI first, see what result you get, and then go talk to Kenric, language director at Lauder. He'll advise you more on your options.

Hi Jason,

How to write a fellowship essay? Is there any key points should be included? What's the percentage of admitted student who get the fellowship? Thanks!
