顶!顶! Support Jason's efforts and noble intentions for prospective MBA students

顶! Support Jason!

Hello Jason and CDers,

I followed through all Jason's posts in this track and some in Wharton's S2S forum. I've got to say, it's pretty impressive. Jason is a living evidence of true MBA spirits. I want to become a person as Jason is.

I have no specific questions to ask here right now But want to swim to the surface to call for more questions for Jason to answer :+)

Thanks a million Jason! Way to go ... ... Halcyon

Hi Jason,

I am wondering if I can provide a third recommendation letter from the head of my part-time association. Because I believe it will present another side of my character besides financial background.

Wharton online info is as below:
Supplementary recommendations, including those from a peer, may be submitted, but should offer additional and valuable insights not addressed in the two required recommendations.

Thanks!

louis_huang:

From the words of an adcom member,
"We are strongly encouraging candidates to only submit 2 recommendations this year and therefore our online application only allows for 2 to be added. If you feel strongly that a third recommendation would add an additional perspective not reflected in the other two, then you may submit a third. However, again, I would strongly encourage using your judgment in doing so."

My translation: Every case is unique. If you truly believe that you have reason to do so, go ahead. But if the adcom thinks that you are unjustifying submitting a third recommendation, they will take that as a reflection of your skills of judgment.

For instance, I submitted three applications. The first two were from my internships, and were appropriate because they were from a professional, working environment. My third was a letter from a professor, which was appropriate because I had just graduated from college, and so this will provide the most recent and accurate portrayal of me as a candidate, in a situation in which business schools are usually not interested to know about (and so wouldn't have qualified as one of the two recommendations).

The questions I would ask myself are these. 1) Could this third recommendation pass of as one of the other two? If so, then don't submit it as a third. Make a judgment of which two of the three to go for. 2) If it can't pass off as one of the other two, why not? Is it because of a lack of substantial information? If so, then don't submit it as a third- this would just indicate that it's a poor quality recommendation, and shouldn't be submitted. If on the other hand it is a very detailed and high quality recommendation, but simply deals with your performance in an area that an adcom would not accept as one of the two recommendations, then I would consider submitting it.

Hope this helps.

I will have a Coffee Chat in Beijing, January 13th 6pm.

http://forum.chasedream.com/North_American_MBA/thread-423174-1-1.html

I will be conducting a coffee chat for five prospective students in Beijing on January 13, at 6pm. I will not just be talking about Wharton, but also my impression of the other business schools, business schoollife in general, and anything else you want to talk about. Interested parties will have to answer the following two questions, and I will choose the five based on your answers. I am doing this to choose the five students whom I believe will benefit the most from the coffee chat.

Keep your answers to 500 words (although this is NOT like a b-school essay, I don't need you to use all 500 words). Please email answers to me at jason.teo.wg10(在) gmail.com. Paste your answers directly into the email (no attachments).

1)     What questions will you want to ask at the coffee chat, that could benefit you and also the others at the chat? (they don’t have to be related only to Wharton) Why do you think these questions are important?

2)     What do you look for when thinking about ‘fit’ with a school? Why do you look for these factors?

I will be holding this coffee chat in a public coffee house, and will send the five chosen students the location. Because the coffee house needs to do business, I expect all attendees to make a purchase at the shop.

PS, there will be other Wharton student events over December and January as well. If you'd rather not take the time to answer these questions, you will still be able to go for those instead.

Jason

Hi, jason
Thanks for your patient explanation and generous help in advance.
My questions are
1. Will Lauder applicants be transfered to regular MBA pool automatically and treated the same as other regular MBA applicants?
or is there a slight possibility that one is admitted by Wharton alone in Lauder program but rejected by MA side, then he/she can get into regular MBA program?
2. If the answer to 1 is NO, can one apply to Lauder R1, and apply(or reapply?) to regular MBA in R2 if fails to Lauder? Any concern for that case from the view of b-school?

Thanks.

1. You can be rejected from Lauder but accepted into Wharton. How it works is that Lauder is a Wharton programme; so they decide if you get into the full Wharton programme. They do meet with the regular MBA adcom to discuss, though. This should also tell you- as I have repeatedly mentioned, although it seems to fall on deaf ears- that there is no 'pool'. Otherwise, how can different adcoms be making decisions separately about who should get into the MBA programme?

Thanks for ur prompt reply.
By "pool" I meant would all Wharton applicants be put together and evaluated regardless of which program they applied, not the usual viewpoint of "pool", which means applicants be grouped by their background.
I think I get ur point, there is only one Wharton adcom, and they take full charge of all MBA programs, whatever regular or joint, they decide whether u can enter Wharton; For Lauder, there is another adcom from school of Arts & Sciences, they determine whether u can get into Lauder program, right?
OK, here's my question, how they arrange an interview that can cover both MBA and Arts&Sciences? Actually they CANNOT interview in OPI, cause it should be completed before application.
Again, thanks for ur repetitive, generous, patient explanation.
Hope u won't be bothered by such maybe a slight dumb questions.

About Lauder

Hello Jason.  A question about the Lauder program if you will.  I listened to the podcast on Lauder and one of the guests on there was a girl who came from China to US at age 13.  Do you see people like that in your track?  I want to know if that is okay because I too came at an early age and want to do the Chinese track.

best,

Lauder is a Wharton programme. It has its own adcom, as does the HCM programme, but they are paid by Wharton. I meant they are separate in that they can make their own separate decisions.

You go for two interviews- one for Lauder, one at the regular Wharton MBA programme. But Lauder reviews your app, and then decides if you are suited for Wharton only, Lauder as well, or none. The Wharton adcom itself doesn't deal with Lauder applicants.

jishi> No. That girl ended up testing very high for her OPI (we need to get a 3 to graduate, and she got a 5- native level), and since then Lauder has generally been very careful about admitting students with too good a language background.

It's case by case though- in the WG11 class, there is a girl who is from Hong Kong, and has lived there her whole life. To find out if you may be a suitable candidate I would contact Lauder directly. When did you come to the US exactly?
