关于twice的用法

OG72的解释中之处twice是副词, 我查了字典, 确实, twice只有一种词性:副词 因为by后面要接名词或代词, 所以这里twice不行. 答案C

但对于下面885中的一题:
17.    In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.
(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of
(E) two times greater than
答案C. 这里的what it was是名词性宾语从句吗? 还是形容词性? 如果是名词性, 那么twice 是不是修饰what从句? 我感觉从意思上面, twice是要修饰这个从句的. 个人认为: 这个题选B好些, 因为twice作为副词修饰as..as是可以讲的通的.

"Twice two is four." 这是M-w上的例句, 这里的two是数词.

这些解释把我弄糊涂了, 究竟副词的用法是什么呀? 请大家帮忙!

这个问题我也有过，当时选的就是B，主要还是句子意思问题（深刻教训啊！！）

    看这个the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States

    C选项的意思是：A的人口增长率是B的两倍

    B选项的意思是：A的人口增长率是B的（人口增长率）的两倍一样快

    感觉平时我们就说：增长率是几倍，没说几倍那样快的

    解释的不好也不清楚，大家请指点一下

he is twice as strong as he was。注意比较对象
A中是twice as fast as the 1970’s
在这里是rate和1970's比较，是不对的
B中用it指代很模糊，
只有c正确比较，而且没有歧义。

感谢两位版主的帮助, 也就是说(C) twice what it was中副词twice这样的用法是可以的, 是吗? 心里还是觉得有点别扭, 不过就这样记住了.

这真是个好问题。我查了同事的一本字典， 非常破旧以至于看不出来源了。
上有例句：
He is twice the man he was. === He has twice the strength he had ===He is twice as strong as he was.
看来前面两句的结构和885-17 答案C 很象，好像是个形容词来修饰后面的名词的样子。(MM， 你是不是就是这点与我心有戚戚耶？)
不过这个字典也是说twice是副词，那么我们是不是只能理解成在上面句子里，它是修饰is的？

dansyMM的解释太及时了, 结合大家所有的建议, 我决定就这么记了: twice只能作副词, 在句子中表达的意思却是比较, 这样的题目, 首先要弄清楚比较的双方是否合理, 如果合理的话, 再看twice作为副词的位置: 可以用在as..as或比较级之前, 也可以放在比较点的名词之前, 担要保证twice前后的词要能直接搭配(副词的作用).

有不妥之处, 还请大家指正!

順便補充一下Dr.eye字典上, 倍數辭句型的用法敘述:
.. times the/my N ...
結構︰…倍數詞＋the（或所有格）＋名詞
說明︰此句型意為“是…的幾倍”。<倍數詞>與<名詞>之間一定有 the 或<所有格>。有時可改為“<倍數詞>＋as＋<形容詞>”。三倍以上的“倍”，通常用“times”。而“more than＋<倍數詞>＋the（或<所有格>）＋<名詞>”譯為“是…的幾倍還不止”。

    It was over twice the distance of the earth from the sun.
    那是地球到太陽的距離的兩倍多。

我想本題用 twice what 或許是因為 what 可以有時可等於 the thing that 的表示.

B 和C的区别在于句子含义，不能够说in 1999 rate of increase of A is nearly twice as fast as it was in 1991. 因为rate 不能够fast, increase 才能够fast！！！
