还有一点补充一下关于instead of ，后面是名词当然可以用啦～ OG里面有选instead of 的例子。为什么平时大家都会去用but rather呢？因为后面跟动词的机会比较多，所以～～～ 还有一组什么来着，我一时想不起来了，也是这个关系。还有些比如because通常对，because of通常不对，但是也是名词简单用法的时候，because of也可能对。。。。。。这个。。。。有谁来总结一下？我不是nn.

不好意思，又是我补充一下。想起来了，就比如like/unlike....as......一样，很多时候选as，但是like也不错，比如简单名词不在列举状态的时候。补充完毕了。

三脚猫(指我自个)过来说两句：我记得自己当时也选的C，想不明白就拿着题使劲看。其实A和C语法上没什么问题，就只能看意思了。1.not A but B和 B instead of A的意思可不完全等价，前面一个not就一棒子把A给打死了。而后面的给A还留了一口气，只是A不如B；

2.至于that...和by which，俺读了又读，似乎有这么一点感觉，不一定对，that...只是解释processes参与了product和make it understandable;而by which就把这个processes给only化了。我的意思是'似乎'只有这个processes product和make it understandable了。

这个题真的拗，不过下次出现了，俺还是改选A了。

(题目看来看去，发现一切都是幻觉...)

我觉得by不一定要理解成“被”，而是可以理解成“通过（某种手段或过程）”。

所以，我gemj大侠原来的理解是说的通的：通过一个过程，语言被创造出来并被理解。

对于A选项，我实在没法接受：produce and make it understandable的用法。

我终于知道c的错误了，正如高手们所说，by不一定要理解成“被”，这不就造成了歧义吗？既然by已经有2种理解了，这就是混淆点，所以c在这里被否定了

I don't see any reason why the choice "C" is wrong. Here "processes by which" can't be understood as"被这个过程" but as "通过这个过程"
    

...通过这个过程, 语言被产生并被理解
    

Many exmple sentences:

问了一个老外，他对GMAT没什么了解，仅仅从语感和考题的目的出发。他选择了A.原因如下：
1、A是更加common的回答,while C是一个更formal的回答
2、A是北美英语更加倾向的回答，主动，有力而且直接，而C是一个有些太正式而显得wordy的回答，比较British英语化
3、A的弱点是instead of，他说老美确实不喜欢instead of，更宁愿用rather than，因为前者有点太随便；C的弱点除了by which（下面讲)，还有就是not...but结构，这个结构给他的感觉好像上来是reveal的是自己不要的然后才是要的，感觉很差，就这点，配合it is produced and understood，给他的感觉很weak。看来ETS所说的主动优先有道理，比较美国化
4、by which和that。他说美国人更喜欢that，因为更直接更有力：that produce and make it understandable用that一个词替换了by which it is四个词，效率高，而且念起来更加顺口。
5、C和A各有微小差异。A只有一个弱点即instead of，而C的弱点更明显，但更清晰（就像中文说：我吃的比你多，和“我吃的饭比你吃的饭多”）。就看谁是受众，如果是英国人，是一个律师文件，C好点，但如果是面向北美人，用于商业文件，建议A就可，足够清除但又不会像C那样清晰的过份.
