American scholars have unearthed groundbreaking evidence suggesting that orchids, a highly diversified plant species, coexisted with dinosaurs. This revelation comes from an analysis of fossilized orchid pollen found on an extinct bee encased in amber, significantly predating previous estimates regarding the age of orchids. The research, spearheaded by a team from Harvard University and featured in the prestigious journal Nature, proposes that orchids could be as ancient as 80 million years, challenging earlier beliefs that pegged their emergence at around 26 million years ago.

Orchids, recognized for their vast diversity and intricate beauty, have long eluded the fossil record, primarily due to their infrequent flowering cycles and preference for humid, tropical climates, which are not conducive to fossilization. However, the discovery of the amber-preserved bee in the Dominican Republic, initially found by a collector in 2000 and later acquired by Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology in 2005, has provided a rare glimpse into the ancient history of these plants.

By examining the DNA of the pollen attached to the bee, which is estimated to be 15-20 million years old, researchers employed molecular-clock DNA analysis techniques to trace the lineage of orchids back to their most recent common ancestor, estimated to have lived around 80 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. This timeline places the origins of orchids in the era just before the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs, approximately 65 million years ago, suggesting that orchids may have witnessed the decline of dinosaurs and subsequently flourished across the globe.

The discovery is hailed not only as a critical piece in solving the puzzle of the orchid family's age but also as one of the first instances where direct evidence of ancient pollination, involving both the pollinator and the plant, has been observed. This finding underscores the intricate evolutionary dance between plants and their pollinators, a relationship that has shaped the natural world over millions of years.

B. By a private collector in the Dominican Republic.
C. During an excavation in the Late Cretaceous period deposits.

A. A reduction in competition from other plant species.
B. The development of new pollination strategies.
C. Changes in the Earth's climate.
D. The spread of orchids to new geographical areas.
E. An increase in the number of pollinator species.

As an April Fools' joke, a group of Chinese researchers at the Beijing Institute of Acoustics have claimed to develop a novel musical instrument, the "Fool’s Erhu," that they suggest can only be played once a year on April 1st. This instrument allegedly combines various acoustic elements from traditional Chinese instruments but has a mythical pitch range that extends beyond the capabilities of any known instrument.

The researchers presented a fictional pitch range chart for the "Fool’s Erhu," claiming it can produce frequencies starting from as low as 5 Hz to as high as 50,000 Hz, far exceeding the normal hearing range of humans (20 Hz to 20,000 Hz). According to their playful hypothesis, these extreme pitches are said to influence listeners' sense of reality, inducing a state of light-heartedness and joviality appropriate for April Fools' Day.

The following is the purported pitch range of various imaginary instruments created for the joke, all of which have fantastical properties:

"Dragon’s Zither" - Capable of sounds from 15 Hz to 22,000 Hz.
"Phoenix’s Flute" - Emits tones from 25 Hz to 30,000 Hz.
"Qilin’s Qin" - Produces vibrations from 10 Hz to 40,000 Hz.
"Tiger’s Pipa" - Ranges from 20 Hz to 35,000 Hz.
"Turtle’s Gong" - Has a deep tone stretching from 5 Hz to 25,000 Hz.
The researchers jokingly suggested that these instruments could be used in an exclusive concert held on the Great Wall of China, where the vibrations could possibly alter the structure of the wall due to their extraordinary frequency range.

1. What is the central theme of the Beijing Institute of Acoustics' April Fools' joke?
A. To announce the development of a new musical instrument.
B. To claim the invention of instruments with supernatural properties.
C. To challenge the existing concepts of musical frequencies.
D. To propose a concert with unreal instruments at a historical site.
E. To demonstrate the influence of pitch on human perception of reality.

2. According to the fictional claim, which imaginary instrument has the widest pitch range?
A. "Dragon’s Zither"
B. "Phoenix’s Flute"
C. "Qilin’s Qin"
D. "Tiger’s Pipa"
E. "Turtle’s Gong"

3. If the "Fool’s Erhu" were real, what unique quality might it possess according to the researchers' playful hypothesis?

B. Capacity to play continuously without rest.
C. Potential to alter physical structures with its vibrations.
D. Capability to induce emotional responses tied to the day of the year.
E. Feature of being made from mythical materials.

A. Believe in the historical significance of the location.
B. Want to test the acoustics of the Great Wall with their instruments.
C. Are humorously exaggerating the power of the invented instruments.
D. Aim to draw tourists to the site on April Fools' Day.
E. Plan to incorporate traditional elements into the performance.

A. Are all within the normal human hearing range.
B. Exceed the normal human hearing range.
C. Fall below the threshold of human hearing.
D. Are within the pitch ranges of existing traditional Chinese instruments.
E. Align with the modern acoustic technology standards.

6. Given the hypothetical frequency of 50,000 Hz for the "Fool’s Erhu," what could be a playful scientific explanation for its ability to influence reality?
A. The frequency resonates with the brain's alpha waves.
B. Such a high pitch could create a sonic boom.
C. The vibrations can synchronize with Earth's magnetic field.
D. The pitch is at a frequency that can temporarily alter DNA structures.
E. It could induce quantum entanglement with the listener's auditory system.

7.  What is the minimum pitch range claimed for the "Phoenix’s Flute"?
A. 5 Hz
B. 15 Hz
C. 20 Hz
D. 25 Hz
