318. La leche league
P1 - There has been a growing interest among historians in the concept of 'maternalism'.
There are contradictory assumptions about the term's meaning.
I asked scholars to suggest some limits and possibilities of 'maternalism' as a paradigm for historical analysis.
P2 - The ensuing discussion was complex and fascinating. Maternalism was seen variously.
P3 - Taking 'maternalism' as a kind of motherhood, the authors tend to focus on the relationship of maternalism to either state-building or to feminism. Example:
Russia/ AL: maternalism and child welfare
Germany/ AT: link maternalism to feminist ideology and action
Japan/ KU: western maternity replaced the motherhood
P4 - US/ MLT tested on 4 groups: the NCM, HHBN, NACW, NWP
EB: a flexible definition
Author: work on the LLL suggested some tensions embedded in the essentialist notions of empowered motherhood
P5 - In LLL: use maternalist to describe the promotion of breastfeeding in the mid 20th century US.
The league's notion of its history and my interpretation indicate the use of 'maternalism' embodies contradictions.
=> Clearly the construction of 'motherhood' changes over time and place and therefore 'maternalism' is also changing meanings.
P6 - The discussion also draws attention to the term 'paternalism'.
The Oxford American Dictionary defines 'paternalism' but the term 'maternalism' is missing.
The work today will contribute to a wider usage of the word.
