For business school PhDs, the tech firm option is generally mainly viable for those in the OR/OM and IT tracks. For the vast majority, academe remains the surest and most reassured destination. Also, there is the stereotyped overqualification concern. This arises and sometimes becomes true often because in the corporate world PhDs are often not paid significantly more than Masters or even undergraduates. For example, computer engineers (e.g., ML engineers) are among the highest paid in a tech firm, but most of them only have Masters or undergraduate degrees. In addition, the tech firm path could become treacherous for potential concerns such as those mentioned above.
