A couple of updates have just been made to the Placement Ranking data, and amongst them is the inclusion of the West Virginia University program. The program had not been considered originally given its newness, small student size, and also the relatively 'low profile' of both WVU and its business school (the former has only recently acquired R1 status and the latter has never made it to the UTD Top 100 Business School Rankings). However, the flyer posting on its Accounting track prompted us to put it under a 'microscopic' scrutiny, and we were immediately impressed that it has done fairly well since its inception. Notably, several graduates of the Finance and Management concentrations -- which the program had originally started with -- have secured AP or visiting AP positions at research schools such as Texas Tech and Tulane. In this sense, it is nearly on a par with the Iowa State University program, which was established at roughly the same time. (Both programs are eloquent proof that faculty support, such as mentiorship early on in a student's PhD journey at WVU, is crucial for placement success. This is true especially for non-top programs.) Therefore, the decision was made that the WVU program deserves to feature in the Placement Rankings. |
