Hope you will make up your mind in a short while. The reason you are wavering between Buffalo and Kansas is that the two look similar at first sight in terms of overall research profile and recent placements (we are using the modifier "recent" because many Buffalo graduates had joined top schools, such as Michigan Ross, until some years back). As mentioned, if you do well enough in either Buffalo or Kansas, you will have a good chance of landing a research school. There is no doubt about that. Buffalo has a research emphasis on AP, but students also have the opportunity to do CF.
Despite the above seeming similarity, Buffalo is definitely stronger. As evidence, Buffalo has been consisstently on the list of ASU Ranking and has a very large number of publications in top finance journals, including JFE, whereas Kansas has never appeared in ASU Ranking and virtually has none in top journals. Kansas has at least five faculty who are recent PhDs; do not expect them to help you in research or be involved in your dissertation.
By the way, both Buffalo and Kansas are very small programs. Each has below ten enrolled students, and Kansas may have even fewer. Kansas admits no more than one or two students (or even none occasionally) a year based on faculty research strengths and financial resources available. They insist upon doing so because they want to ensure that all students are well supprted and successful. That's why they are doing well and are praised for being a rising star of sorts. |
