Q13:

It is true of both men and women that those who marry as young adults live longer than those who never marry.  This dose not show that marriage causes people to live longer, since, as compared with other people of the same age, young adults who are about to get married have fewer of the unhealthy habits that can cause a person to have a shorter life, most notably smoking and immoderate drinking of alcohol.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument above?

  1. Marriage tends to cause people to engage less regularly in sports that involve risk of bodily harm.

  2. A married person who has an unhealthy habit is more likely to give up that habit than a person with the same habit who is unmarried.

  3. A person who smokes is much more likely than a nonsmoker to marry a person who smokes at the time of marriage, and the same is true for people who drink alcohol immoderately.

  4. Among people who marry as young adults, most of those who give up an unhealthy habit after marriage do not resume the habit later in life.

  5. Among people who as young adults neither drink alcohol immoderately nor smoke, those who never marry live as long as those who marry.

Q30:

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

The irradiation of food kills bacteria and thus retards spoilage.  However, it also lowers the nutritional value of many foods.  For example, irradiation destroys a significant percentage of whatever vitamin B1 a food may contain.  roponents of irradiation point out that irradiation is no worse in this respect than cooking.  However, this fact is either beside the point, since much irradiated food is eaten raw, or else misleading, since _______.

  1. many of the proponents of irradiation are food distributors who gain from food’s having a longer shelf life

  2. it is clear that killing bacteria that may be present on food is not the only effect that irradiation has

  3. cooking is usually the final step in preparing food for consumption, whereas irradiation serves to ensure a longer shelf life for perishable foods

  4. certain kinds of cooking are, in fact, even more destructive of vitamin B1 than carefully controlled irradiation is

  5. for food that is both irradiated and cooked, the reduction of vitamin B1 associated with either process individually is compounded

Q13: The author talks about young adults who are about to get marriedhave fewer unhealthy habbits even before the marriage.  B & Ddiscuss what happen after marriage.  So, B & D are not reallyrelevant to the author's argument.

Q30: There is an ongoing discussion on this one:

I have a different opinion on choice B and D;

The argument regards that the person with few unhealthy habitat inclines to marry, that is the little unhealthy habitat is not occasioned by marriage. While B and D believe that the marriage may at some degree lead to the reduction in unhealthy habitat. Therefore, B and D can support the claim that the argument fights against....

To be discussed.....

It is the having fewer of unhealthy habits, not the marriage, that leads to long life. Only E explicitly argues for this point.

(This dose not show that marriage causes people to live longer),而B,D支持论证过程中的一些话,但是这些话并非文章结论,所以不符合作者意图。

To weiyu:
The author said "This dose not show that marriage causes people to livelonger".  Both B & D contradict this statement of the atuhor,so they are not good choices.

现在想通了,题目的结论就是marriage doesn't cause people to live longer,E说没结婚也可以长寿,所以support了。仔细看看B和C,确实在说marriage do cause people to live longer,因为marriage使人改掉许多怀习惯~

In the argument, the author has stated that marriage is not the cause of long life. Both B and D revealed that the long life has coonection with the marriage. In E, the statement shows that the youg adults is more healthier than other groups, supporting the main idea in the argument.
