You can know a lot about a person through the types of friends this person has.
In the most cases, when people are referring to the relationship between two people, they are most likely to use the word “friend” to describe their relationship. Some people argue that friendship is only a small part of people ‘s life and thus could not use as a way to know a certain person. However, other people are against this idea and believe that they could judge a person by taking a glance at his or her friends. I stand for the latter opinion.
First of all, friends could show us people’s interests. As is so often pointed out, birds of a feather flock together. People who share the common interests have high possibility in becoming friends. Take my own experience as an example. At the first time when I acquainted with my best friend, our conversation started from a famous Japanese cartoon we both liked. With this as a turning point, we gradually became familiar with each other and found that we have a lot in common other than cartoon. After so many years, I still hold the point that what bonds us most is our common interests. Therefore, we could safely say that at least there is one common point we could find between friends.
Second, we could make a simple hypothesis about the personality of people through that of their friends. As for normal people, they are more willing to spend their time with people who make them relax rather than put them in a nervous state. For instance, introverted people are less likely to have a group of friends who are outgoing due to their different lifestyles. Social contact plays a vital role in outgoing people’s life. However, the social relationship may be too complicated to deal with for introverted people. As a result, it is hard for them to maintain their relationship with outgoing people and vice versa. Hence, people tend to have friends who are similar in personality.
Finally, seldom could we see a person who has a noble character make friend with a notorious guy. Sometimes, a disappointment towards people’s character is strong enough to break a couple of friends apart. For example, the famous composer, Beethoven, and the great monarch, Napoleon, were friends and he even composed Symphony No.3 to dedicate to Napoleon. However, he tore the music score into pieces after hearing the news that Napoleon became the emperor of France. Thus, we could know people’s character from their friends because there is always a principle on which they constantly insist.
Owing to the reasons I mentioned above, I would arrive at the conclusion that we could learn a lot from people’s friends.

The reading passage describes a trend that people nowadays tend to read less literature and is concerned about this phenomenon. However, in the listening, the professor thinks that this worry is unnecessary.
First, contrary to what is said in reading passage, public will not miss out on the important benefits, such as expansion of understanding of the language, exercise of imagination, and sympathy for others. Actually, other books, other than literature book, could provide people intellectual stimulation. Therefore, even though the decline is sharp for literature books, there are still other good books for people to read.
Second, the reading passage displays a bias to the forms of entertainment today. In fact, people spend less time not only on literature books but also on all kinds of books. The culture has changed. Listening to a brilliant song and watching a good movie do not waste people’s time. Instead, these creative entertainments speak more directly to contemporary concerns more directly than literature does.
Third, opposite to what is said in reading passage, we should not blame people for not reading literature books. Conversely, it is the authors who should take responsibility for the decline of literature. They write the books in a way that people hardly understand. Hence, there is not much reason to support that earlier generation would read today’s literature.
