楼主1月19收到的UIUC MFE的AD，手上还有BU MSMF的AD， 想了解一下UIUC MFE发放AD的情况，大家请踊跃投票
因为纠结于BU和UIUC的选择，（因为二月底之前两所都要交deposit），所以做了一些研究，从在读生的口中问来了一些情报，大致了解情况如下：
关于UIUC MFE,（我直接引用原文了）
关于课程：
“1. The curriculum is posted on the website. As you can see, there is a project and an elective. The elective can be any course in the university.
- There was some talk about us being the first class to take classes in Chicago for the 3rd semester, and it was cancelled. I think that the 2015 class will go to Chicago for 3rd semester, I'm not sure.
- We still have to go to Chicago for some of the courses, and the final project to meet our clients every week.
- You can choose any course that will fit in your schedule, but you should talk to Emily first before registering. If you are planning to follow the curriculum on the website and graduate in 3 semesters, then you only have 3 credits available for first two semesters. If you graduate in 2 years, then you can take a lot more electives.”
关于就业：
“2. I found an internship for this summer in November 2013. The job placement/internship statistics for this 2014 class is likely to not be very good. Like you said, the 2014 MSFEs in particular are full of Chinese, and many of them come from wealthy families so they have no reason to stay/live in the US.
- They also dont know how to job-hunt in the US.
- 2013 MSFEs were better, and most of the people I know got a job. Some students got multiple offers as well as offers to continue to phd studies.
- Simply, the people who put in a persistent effort to find an internship and did the research were/are successful. Start looking for an internship in your first semester, visit the Engineering Career Services for mock-interviews/advice often, and don't hide in a cloud of Chinese students so that you can polish your social skills/english - and I guarantee that you will find an internship/job. ”
关于授课的教授：
“The engineering professors know the material that they are teaching, and I don't believe it is necessary for them to know finance or have a background in finance industry to teach their topics. Even if they dont "know finance," they still have a lot more knowledge on finance than the students:
- Our professors are all (minus one maybe) professional lecturers, teachers, and researchers. Some FE programs just hire people from industry for their program. I would rather pick a professor that has done world-class research on applying stochastic modeling in electrical engineering to teach me stochastic calculus than a businessman.
- The IE department just hired Jackie Shen, and he is an MSFE professor. He has an extensive financial background. Another IE professor, Liming Feng has a lot of knowledge on finance.
- You can ask any famous hedge fund if financial industry experience is important to work as a quant researcher at their firm. They will tell you "no."”
关于BU MSMF, (我还是直接引用了，大家自己看看)
“The professors vary a lot. From a teaching quality, they are all good (in my opinion). They are all PhD's though. There is a young guy (he is new) who has got his PhD from Stanford, he worked in Goldman for a bit and decided he didn't like it. Most of the professors have worked in the industry at some point. The director still does some consulting. But there are no "blue chip" professors.
I don't know much about this year's placement as is still very early. Only 4 students I think already have offers. Today one of my friends got an offer that pays 40dls an hour. Of course he accepted it. So far I had one interview for State Street Associates, but I blew it (back to square one). Last year's placement was not bad I hear. From the students that just graduated, I don't have official numbers, but we were told in early December that about 50% of students have had found jobs so far. I think is good, specially since that was before graduation.
Yes, courses are theoretically driven. This is Math Finance (slight difference with financial engineering). The Stats course is very applied, C++ of course is also and the optional course (Quant Strategies), Fixed Income can be very applied, but is not something that necessarily you will use in life. Depends on your interest. Still don't know much about the classes of the last semester.
To prepare I would recommend to read a little on Shreve I and II (the contents will be discussed in class, but there is a high difference in performance from the people that already know that stuff from the people who don't). Also to review the grad prob and stat courses. It will be useful to have concepts fresh.”
