The reading passage introduces a term called state-dependent learning, which means memory is most effective when an individual is in the same environment of learning as it was when the memory was formed. The professor then gives an example to illustrate this term. A group of students were studying tropical pants. They spent their day time in the classroom, studying with the same classmates every day. But one evening, one of the students and a few classmates went to the student’s home to study. So they changed their place and time for studying, and also the people around them were not classmates but instead the student’s family. Surprisingly, because of these changes, the students found it quite hard to retrieve their memory about what they learned in class. But when they returned to their classroom the next day, their memory all came back somehow.

I prefer buying books to borrowing books. True, borrowing books can save you a lot of money and you can get almost any book, even the latest releases if you are willing to wait or join a queue. However, you have to return it on time even if you have not finished it. However, by buying the book, you can read it wherever you want and whenever you want, and once you have read it, you can lend it to friends and family or even give it as a gift. Another strength of owing books is that we can take whatever notes on the margin of the pages of the books.

I think the type of social event celebrated most in my country is the flag-raising ceremony on National Day, which falls on the 1st of October each year. Early morning that day, at around 6 o’clock, more than ten thousand people, from all over the country, gather at TAM Square in the capital city Beijing, waiting to see the ceremony with their own eyes. The view of the honor guard parade is fantastic, the guards all wearing green military uniform and marching to TAM with a high spirit. Then the National Flag is raised up, accompanied by the National Anthem, while crowds stand up and remain in solemn silence. Each birthday celebration of the great country always begins with such a flag-raising ceremony, which strengthens the unity and patriotism of its people.

The lecture talks about protective coloring in animals, which is a type of adaptation that allows an animal to blend into its surroundings so it can stay hidden from its predators. There are two types of protective coloring. The first type is permanent coloring, which means the animal keeps its protective coloration throughout the year. For example, a type of frog always lives in a fixed location. To blend into its surroundings, the frog is always colored brown, similar to the color of the falling leaves around. The second type is altering coloration. With this type of coloration, an animal is able to change its color according to different surroundings. A typical example is the lizard. When a lizard moves to a place of dead and withering trees, it would change into the color of brown, but when it stays among the shrub it would change into the color of green.

The reading passage introduces a term called illusion of transparency, which is a tendency for people to overestimate the degree to which their personal mental state is known by others. The professor then uses his personal experience as an illustration of this phenomenon. One day he was invited to a dinner. The hostess made several dishes but there was one dish that the professor did not like because it had garlic in it. The professor tried to hide this negative feeling, but he still suspected that his emotion was perceived by others. So after the dinner the professor checked with a friend, who said that he had not noticed anything unusual about the professor. The professor called the hostess the next day, who did not say anything about the dish, which confirms that the professor’s worry was simply an illusion.

The woman currently works for her professor but she complains that all she does is office work like copying. She wants to work as a research assistant rather than an office assistant. The boy recommends her to find another job at the student center, or talk with her professor and let her know that she wants to get more involved in academic research. I prefer the second solution because I think there may be a lack of communication between the student and her professor. Maybe the professor is not clear about what the girl student really wants. So talking to the professor about her desire to work more as a research assistant will be a good step towards solving the problem. Furthermore, even if she finds another job working for another professor, who knows if this new job will be better or worse?

A student has made two suggestions to encourage more students to attend the poem reading activity at the school. The first suggestion is to move the poem reading from evening to the afternoon, and the second suggestion is to invite a few students to read poems. In the conversation, the girl agrees with these suggestions. She says that students are more free during the afternoon so they are more likely to go to the poem reading if it is scheduled in the afternoon. And secondly, if students themselves get the chance to read poems, they would be more interested in this activity, and their friends will also be attracted, so the number of audience will surely increase.
