Thank you very much for the prompt reply. Are HBS interested at IT Strategy&lanning consulting? What's HBS graduates' advantages, compared with Stanford or Sloan? Thanks.

HBS admits people with all kinds of background, including IT strategy & planning. There's also an IT module in the Technology and Operations course in the first year. Key HBS advantage is general management -- the ability to identify the big picture and come up with the overal strategy to support that vision, which may include many different aspects of business. It's more like a conductor to coordinate different plays, rather than the individual playing musicians.

Happy New Year! Clark! Touched by your kind and proactive characters!

I have known your story through the book edited by CD. It reads great!

Is there any disavangtage for me to apply your school at the third round?

In the whole package, which part should I focus on, personal life and social activities or

professional achievements? It seems that I am more intrested in social acitivities and personal life although I also provide excellent performance at work.

I am  from the mailand China too.

Dear Clark:

First, Happy New Year and thanks for your information.

I am a R2 applicant. Since I came from engineering background and did not take the business related course in college, will it be painful for me to study in HBS emphasizing the case study extensively?

1) Three mainland students were admitted in the 3rd round last year. So there's still a pretty high chance in R3. However, the number of people admitted in R3 is more likely to be impacted by R1 and R2, depending on how many have already been admitted in R1/R2 from China.

2) What HBS is looking for is the leadership potential of the applicants, which can be demonstrated in any of the three areas you mentioned. So I'd suggest you highlight whichever area that you have most passion about and can best deomonstrate your leadrship potential. Lastly, you probably want to mention all of the three to strike a balance throughout the package.

Having a staged plan and excuting on the most important actions at each stage (80/20 rule) is how I did it. You can find more details of my application process in the CD MBA 2004 Interview (part 3). Everyone should build a unique story about what you believe, what you are passionate about and what you are good at. Mine is only for reference.

It doesn't matter too much. Though the beginning could be very intense and even a bit 'painful', you will pick it up very quickly. You can also get great support from your classmates and study gorup mates. In terms of catching up with new knowledge, Chinese students rarely fail in the U.S.. It's the class participation that needs real efforts. Good luck!

Hi, Clark,

What is your idea for this year's essay writing?

1. Describe a significant change that you brought about in an organization and its impact on your development as a leader. (400-word limit)

2. What are your three most substantial accomplishments, and why do you view them as such? (600-word limit)

3. Provide a candid assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. (400-word limit)

4. How do you define success? (400-word limit)

5. What are your career aspirations, and how can an MBA help you to reach them? Why now? (400-word limit)

6. What do you wish the MBA Admissions Board had asked you? (400-word limit)

Thanks.
