2013 Fall Finance Ph.D. Applicant
BYU undergraduate, GPA 3.91 / 4.00, double major in actuarial science and economics, minor in mathematics.
Math courses
Undergraduate level:
“A”s in Calculus1, Calculus2, Calculus3, math proof, linear algebra, ODE, abstract algebra, real analysis1, real analysis2;
“A-“ in mathematical finance.
Graduate level:
“A”s in advanced probability1,advanced probability2 (stochastic process), real analysis

Stats courses
Undergraduate level:
“A”s in Bayesian statistics, statistics principle, SAS1, SAS2, statistical computing, intro to regression, inference, life contingencies;
“A-“s in analysis of variance, theory of interest, stats communication.
Graduate level:
“A” in stat methods for research 1

Econ courses
Undergraduate level:
“A’s in principles of micro, principles of macro, intermediate micro 1, statistics for economists, intro to econometrics, financial economics;
“A-“s in intermediate micro 2, intermediate macro 2;
“B+” in international trade and finance
Graduate level:
“A-“s in advanced micro, advanced macro, advanced econometrics

“Current Taking“ mathematical econ

Finance and Accounting courses:
Undergraduate level:
“A”s in financial management (bschool), financial economics (econ), principles of accounting (bschool);
“A-“s in mathematical finance (math), theory of interest (stats)
Graduate level:
“A” in PhD-level asset pricing (bschool)

Research: RA with two finance professors at BYU and one stats assistant professor at Harvard. No publication, no TA experience.
letter of recommendation (all should be strong):
One from BYU finance prof. I worked as RA for, graduated from MIT finance, actively publishing in top finance journals;
One from BYU finance prof. I took the phd asset pricing class from, graduated from Rochester econ, used to be a visiting professor at MIT, actively publishing in top finance journals;
One from Harvard stats assistant prof. I worked as RA for, graduated from Carnegie Mellon CS, actively publishing in top stats and CS journals.

Schools I am applying to (26, All finance Ph.D.): Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Duke, Michigan, OSU, USC, WUSTL, Washington, Utah, Minnesota, ASU, Arizona, UT-Austin, UNC-CH , UIUC, UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSD, Rochester, Rice, GSU, Colorado, Miami, Houston.

My weakness: 1. Low GMAT especially verbal; 2. performance in econ courses is not strong (lots of “A-“s, got a “C+” in micro principle in freshman year then repeated it to get an “A”); 3. No publication; 4. No TA experience 5.No industry work experience 6. Although BYU ranked top (#7 in the nation) in sending students to top phd programs such as econ, accounting, … but I am not sure about its performance in sending students to finance phd (sometimes good, sometimes bad), after all BYU is not top enough; 7. I am an international student.

Research

Graduate-level?

-- by 会员 kafkayang (2013/1/19 6:12:17)

-- by 会员 Dylan890328 (2013/1/19 7:32:51)
