题目: The data from a survey of high school math and science teachers show that in the district of Sanlee many of these teachers reported assigning daily homework, whereas in the district of Marlee, most science and math teachers reported assigning homework no more than two or three days per week. Despite receiving less frequent homework assignments, Marlee students earn better grades overall and are less likely to be required to repeat a year of school than are students in Sanlee. These results call into question the usefulness of frequent homework assignments. Most likely the Marlee students have more time to concentrate on individual assignments than do the Sanlee students who have homework every day. Therefore teachers in our high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
正文: The argument is well presented and appears to be relative sound at the first glance, the arguer claim that teachers in our high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week. The basis for this recommendation is that the teachers in the district of Sanlee assign more homework than the teachers in the district of Marlee do, while, the students in Sanlee are likely to have better performance than the students in Marlee do on examination.Based on it, an additional reason speculated by the arguer in support this argument is that it seems Marlee students have more time to concentrate on individual assignments than do the Sanlee students who have homework every day. However, a close scrutiny about the argument will reveal that several specific evidences should be added in order to make the argument to be more cogent and convincing.
Initially, the author must give evidence that amount of each assignment from teachers of different district is equal. If the evidence is not true, it could obviously weaken the conclusion, for if the amount of homework assigned by teacher in Marlee, though less frequent, is much more than the amount by teacher in Sanlee, we couldn’t assert less homework contribute to a better performance. In terms of the above assumption, as the matter of fact, the assignments of the students in Sanlee are not burdensome than that in Marlee. Besides this, an evidence about the homework of other subjects is needed, because if the homework from other subject is onerous, students still tried of handling homework. The only difference is the allocation of time on various subjects.
Secondly, arguer should provide an evidence that the disturbance of other factors have been eliminated. In the argument, the author only mention about the frequency of homework assignments. However It’s extremely possible that student’s performance would be determined by other striking factors , such as the quality of teaching, the study sources available, even the background of student’s family. In fact, according to the result of a number of experiments and surveys, though the cause is not completely understanded , a students in a richer district and with a better family background tend to perform more excellent. Thus if we learn that the economy situation in Marlee is better than Sanlee’s or there are more high-quality libraries in Marlee accessible, the argument is definitely be undermined .Without ensuring the other determinants could be precluded, we can hardly accept the conclusion.
Thirdly, in spite we concede the above evidence indeed prove the negative relationship between the frequency of homework be assigned and the grade performance, we should also be informed that whether the education system, custom and social situation vary from district to district. It’s known that the same measure always get distinctive consequence when apply to different situations. In this case, the custom in different district may play a remarkable different role in adopting the same policy. Imaging a state with a leisurely custom we named it state A and a state with a high-speed pace custom we named it state B, even the policy the author proposed have been carried out, the students of state B is more likely to use the time have been spared to delve into the flied he or she is interest in which, absolutely is a boon to his or her career. While the students of state A influenced by the atmosphere they grow up in, may hang out with friends, enjoy shop spree or take parties every day, and at last achieve nothing. The same result may be got in the scenario with different education system in two districts. Either of these scenarios, if true, would cast serious doubt on the author’s claim. Without counting for all the determinants, the argument can’t be reasonably concluded.
There are other misgiving such as the reliability of the survey, the time the arguer set for optima frequency for assigning homework and so forth also need discuss.
To sum up, the argument is far from powerful enough to substantiate that teachers in the author’s high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week. In order to draw a better conclusion, the arguer should reason more convincingly, cite some evidence that is more persuasive, and take every any consideration into count.
求拍啊,往死里拍,特别是觉得论证不充分,或者不到位什么,还有文章结构什么这种可能事关重大的问题,请不要手下留情,最好给我些建议,感激不尽!!
