XDF-21-16

16. New techniques in thermal-scanning photography, a
process that records radiation from surface areas,
makes it possible to study the effects of calefaction,
or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever
   before.

   (A) makes it possible to study the effects of calefac-
tion, or warming, of a river in greater detail
       than ever before
   (B) make it possible to study, in greater detail, the
effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river
       than ever before
   (C) have made it possible to study in greater detail
than ever before the effects of calefaction, or
       warming, of a river
   (D) make possible the study of the effects of calefac-
tion, or warming, of a river in greater detail
       than it ever was before
   (E) has made it more possible than ever before to
study in greater detail the effects of calefaction,
       or warming, of a river

XDF-20-9
9. Migraine, the most debilitating common form of
headache, afflicts perhaps 18 million Americans, who
collectively lose 64 million workdays a year, and
they cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses
  and lost work time.

  (A) year, and they cost the nation $50 billion in
      medical expenses and lost
  (B) year and thus cost the nation $50 billion in
      medical expenses and lost
  (C) year, so as to cost the nation $50 billion in
      medical expenses and lost
  (D) year that costs the nation $50 billion in lost
      medical expenses and
  (E) year, which thus cost the nation $50 billion in
      lost medical expenses and
Ans: B, I choose D

To Joy,

XDF-20-9
9. Migraine, the most debilitating common form of
headache, afflicts perhaps 18 million Americans, who

   (D) year that costs the nation $50 billion in lost
       medical expenses and
   (E) year, which thus cost the nation $50 billion in
       lost medical expenses and
Ans: B, I choose D

我也选B,但我觉得“cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses and lost”的主语是Americans,不是偏头痛。

To Greenfish,

谢谢fish, grassgreen,我奇怪这题的cost 的发起人为什么是americans,应该是整个事件啊:collectively lose 64 million workdays  a year?

To Joywzy,

have made it possible to study in greater detail
than ever before the effects of calefaction, or
       warming, of a river

To Joywzy,

XDF-20-9
9. Migraine, the most debilitating common form of
headache, afflicts perhaps 18 million Americans, who
collectively lose 64 million workdays a year, and
they cost the nation $50 billion in medical expenses
   and lost work time.

   (A) year, and they cost the nation $50 billion in
medical expenses and lost   (they 的前面有两个复数名词, 修饰不明确)
   (B) year and thus cost the nation $50 billion in
       medical expenses and lost
   (C) year, so as to cost the nation $50 billion in
medical expenses and lost (so as to 一般的用法是系动结构,即前面应有个be 动词。另外so as to 表目的,不符题意)
   (D) year that costs the nation $50 billion in lost
       medical expenses and (限定修饰year不对)
   (E) year, which thus cost the nation $50 billion in
       lost medical expenses and (which修饰不明)
Ans: B, I choose D

Researchers are studying plastics that dissolve at different rates, and they are finding that the so-called "quick disintegration" plastics are taking more time to deteriorate than (they originally seemed.)
B:they seemed originally
C:it seemed that they would originally
D:it originally seemed
E:it originally seemed they would.

The tricky part here is choosing between "they" and "it". "they" would imply that the plastics themselves first seemed to do one thing, and then ended up doing something else. The example "it" --the pronoun that has no antecedent--makes more sense; it suggests simply that initial indications turned out to be misleading. Using "it", it's necessary to include the phrase "they would" to make itclear-- what seemed to be the case.

LZM GMAT
For many traverlers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than the ( they originally seemed)
B they originally seem to
c they seemingly would cost originally
D it seemed originally
E it originally seemded they would
LZM's answer: A       they originally seemed..

what the hell is that?? definitely the same type of question, different answer...
Furthermore, in kplan, even answer A is not a good answer, I think.
"they" is fault, because in the passage, there is another "they", which means researcher...

in answer E, what does "it" refers to??
the idomatic usage of "seem" is : it seems that... but E omit the "that"
OR sb seems to...., as A do...

So I prefere to choice A, because it is close to the answer of ETS..

        than ever before
    (C) have made it possible to study in greater detail
than ever before the effects of calefaction, or

    (D) make possible the study of the effects of calefac-

        than it ever was before
    (E) has made it more possible than ever before to
study in greater detail the effects of calefaction,
        or warming, of a river
