关于杨鹏长难句的一点问题，可能比较低级，不过希望高手相助！

近期在看杨鹏长难句这本书，每天学习10句，基本上是一眼看过去能把句子的主谓，修饰成分什么的划出来，但是有些细节自己还是不清楚，虽然有人说看句子不必太抠语法，懂意思就行，但是我心里想着慌啊。。。今天看的是30~40句，有些问题，希望有高手帮忙解释一下。30.Studiesby Hargrave and Geen estimated natural community grazing rates by measuringfeeding rates of individual zooplankton species in the laboratory and thencomputing community grazing rates for field conditions using the knownpopulation density of grazers.
杨鹏说这个“using the known population density of grazers”是一个分词结构，在这里是说“用已知的捕食者的种群密度计算出野外的群体捕食速率”，那么这个分词是作方式状语修饰“computing”这个动作的吗？它省略了什么，为什么可以放在最后这样用呢？


35.Inthe early 1950’s，historians who studied preindustrial Europe（which we may define here as Europe in the period from roughly 1300 to1800） began，for the first time in large numbers，to investigate more of thepreindustrial European population than the 2 or 3 percent who comprised thepolitical and social elite：the kings，generals，judges，nobles，bishops，and local magnates who had hitherto usually filled history books.
杨鹏的解释：这句话另外一个难以理解的地方是more of the preindustrialEuropean population than the 2 or 3 percent，表示的是在工业化以前的欧洲人口中超过了那2%到3%的人，亦即占97%到98%的人民群众。


我想说。。。。我看完这个解释还是不明白more of........than......的这个用法啊。。。。。。

关于问题2，more of per se 有‘更大程度，更多’的意思
关于问题1，我觉得后面的分词是在‘呼应’前面的那个分词，即computing
