一共用了28分钟,求指点一下,如果可以,就准备这样练下去了。

The followingappeared in an editorial from a newspaper serving the town of Saluda.
The Saluda Consolidated High School offers over 200different courses from which its students can choose. A much smaller privateschool down the street offers a basic curriculum of only 80 different courses, but it consistently sends a higher proportion of its graduating seniors on tocollege than Consolidated does. By eliminating at least half of the coursesoffered there and focusing on a basic curriculum, we could improve studentperformance at Consolidated and also save many tax dollars.

The endorsed conclusion in the above argument is that theSaluda Consolidated High School should eliminate at least half of the coursesoffered to its students and only focus on a basic curriculum. The basis of thisargument is that the author of the passage, which is showed on the newspaper, states that because the a smaller private school closed to the SaludaConsolidated High School only provide around 80 courses, but that schoolactually sends more graduating seniors to college than Consolidated does. So,the author suggests that Consolidate should mimic the strategy adopted by thisprivate school in order to improve its own student performance and to savemoney. At the first glance, the argument appears to be somewhat convincing, butfurther examination reveals that the argument suffers from dubious assumptionand unacceptable reasoning, both of which need to be addressed to substantiatethe argument.

To begin with, the author commits a fallacy of weak analogy,a fallacy that people tend to assume that the degree to the similarity betweentwo subjects is closer than it actually is. In this case, the author tends tothink in a way that what leads to the private school’s success will definitelybring the Consolidate to the same situation, because the both the privateschool and Consolidate are schools. However, factors, other than the number ofcourses provided, may contribute to the success of the private school. Oneexample would be that the private school has higher quality of students thanConsolidate does, because when the private school examine the candidacy of theapplications from students before they enter to the school, the school has arequirement that the average grade should be no lower than 85. On the contrary, for the Consolidate, it only has a requirement that the average grade should beno lower than 70. As a result, the private school’s students are better thanthe students in Consolidated in terms of the average grade prior to school.

Furthermore, the author commits a fallacy of gratuitousassumption. He/she assumes that for the courses provided in Consolidate, ifthose courses are also provided by the private school, students in thosecourses will have higher performance than student in other courses. That is theunderlying reason why the author claims that if the courses provided solely byConsolidated were to be eliminated, the average performance of the studentswould increase. However, as you can tell, this assumption is dubious, since no evidenceis showing that the assumption made by the author is true.

Lastly, the author also claims that by eliminating at leasthalf of the courses, Consolidate would save many tax dollars. The underlyingreasoning behind this assertion is very unclear because no evidence isindicating that those courses, which are aimed to eliminated, actually suffersany loss in terms of financial perspective. What if those courses are actuallygenerating profits for Consolidate to finance other in-school research ordifferent types of scholarships and awards to its top students? What ifproviding a large base of courses is the main reason that potential studentsare applying for Consolidate? Therefore, if the elimination decision were tomake, there might be a potential downside, which will adversely affectConsolidate.

In conclusion, the argument showed on the newspaper isundermined by the reason above. To strengthen the argument, the author needs tofurther examine the decision’s context. For example, the author may need toknow whether the number of courses provided is the only reason that studentsfrom the private school has higher performance than the students ofConsolidate. To make the argument more reasonably acceptable, the author mayalso needs to know which courses should be determined to be the target, if theelimination decision is going to underway.
