Argument 20 题目:
"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. ======================================================================================= 字数 464 (有点少,时间问题。。。。) ======================================================================================= In this memorandum, the business managerclaims that they should restore the time devoted to weather and local news toits former level and devote less time to national news. The author providescomparing data through this decade and the fact that many companies withdrawtheir advertisement to convince us of his recommendation. His suggestion seemsgood, however, lack of more detailed evidence can weaken the author' argument. In the first place, the author asserts thatmost of the complaints were concerned with their station's coverage of weatherand local news. The author doesn't inform us of how many viewers are watchingtheir late-night program. There is a big chance that most of the viewers aresatisfied with the nowadays program arrangement, although most of thecomplaints are concerning with local news and weather. The business managerignores this kind of probability and therefore readers may regard this argumentas unconvincing. To make his argument more persuasive, the author has toprovide more specific evidence indicating that the most of the viewers areunsatisfied with too much national news. In addition, the manger claims that somelocal businesses that used to advertise during the news program have canceledtheir advertising contracts. Those withdraws from the television station canalso be rendered by many other specific reasons, say, their lack of money andso forth. We have to be concerned with the time of the program: the program isa late-night program, which mean that it is likely that during this decade, with the high pace of the development of the society, many people are facingmuch more pressure, which leads to their habits of sleeping earlier than theydid ten years ago. In this way, the evidence of withdrawing of advertisingseems tenuous. Unless the manager provides evidence that probabilities aboveare impossible, the recommendation shouldn't be accepted by the televisionstation. Finally, granted that evidence concerningabove question are added to the argument, the manager's claim about theirincreasing profits is unwarranted. There are many other programs during theday, and they can earn profits from those programs instead of late-nigh newsprogram. And although the late-night news program is getting better, it islikely that the programs during other time period will make bad effect to thecompany; therefore the whole benefit of the company is also likely to decrease.Just lack of evidence indicating the company’s other viewing condition mightmake the conclusion that their benefits will rise unconvincing. To sum up, the argument in this memorandumis seemingly good, but lack of many specific evidence leads to the argumentless convincing. Only by adding more evidence can the argument be strengthened, otherwise, challenging questions from the readers will subvert the incompletereasoning progress and therefore the recommendation is not reasonable. |
