The reading passage concentrates on theissue of the reasons why salvage logging is beneficial both to a damaged forestand to the economy, and the professor's lecture deals with the same topic. However, he argues that salvage logging is not beneficial, which completelycontradicts with the information in the reading passage. And in the lecture, heuses three specific points to support his idea. First of all, the passage states that it isgood for forest to recover through removing the remains of dead trees andmaking room for fresh growth, while the lecture disagrees with this opinion. Asto the evidence in the speech, cleaning up after a disaster is not necessarybecause the dead trees can make the soil rich in nutrient which is helpful forthe growth of the new ones. So, the passage's theory is not plausible. In addition, contrary to the author'sstatement in the reading that salvage logging helps minimize the dangers ofinsect infestation which is harmful to the forest, the professor argues that itis not reasonable. In fact, some insects contribute to the growth of the forestinstead of being harmful, and it is also used by birds, which are beneficialfor the trees. What's more, the evidence shows that salvage logging do moreharm than insects do. Finally, the lecture is against the passageagain. The passage demonstrates that salvage has economic benefits. On theother hand, the professor points that the profits made by the salvage loggingis temporary and it can not last long, and most of the income is gained by theworkers from other places with higher training and skills. Obviously, theprofessor's argument disproves its counterpart in the article.
