I have a question regarding first round deadline. I'm scheduled to take the GMAT on Oct 21. Assuming all goes well, I'll get the score on the test day. I know it usually takes few weeks to get the writing score. Do I have to wait until I get the writing score in order to fill it in the application? And when they say the "application deadline", does that only refer to the data I submit my application on-line? Or does it mean everything must be received by the Admission office (recommendations, official GMAT, transcripts)?

Thanks for your input!

I am not sure about this. I think you can send an email to the admission office to confirm. If they don't reply, feel free to give them a call.

I also have a question regarding the "Health Sector Management" program. Does any of the Chinese students/alumni major in this program? I'd like to get some inside scoop about the major.

Thanks!

Although I am not a HSM student, I'd like to say something I know. It's not a major. It is like an elective course. If you register in this program, you will attend a full week course just before the beginning of the MBA program. After that week, you will have to attend seminars and work on your papers weekly. You can get three credits from this program.

Many pharmaceutical recruiters prefer HSM students. It will be a big advantage.

Hope other HSM students can shed more light on this topic.

The HSM program is a concentration within the Fuqua MBA program. There are 3 required courses and 2 electives for the program. The first is a required one week course that you can take either in the summer before school starts or between your first and second year.

The second is a required seminar series where leaders in the health sector come and talk about a specific topic in their industry. Some examples of the speakers, if you are interested in the pharma industry, include: William Weldon, CEO, J&J; Dan Sullivan, District Manager, Eli Lilly; David Sugano, VP, Schering-Plough; Judy Lewent, CFO, Merck, etc.

The final required course is Economics of Health Care. After that, you need to take 2 other electives from a pool of courses to satisfy the HSM program requirement. In total, the HSM program takes up approx. 12 credits, so you still have plenty of opportunities to take other courses electives in areas such as Finance or Marketing.

Fuqua's HSM program is older than any other similiar programs in top MBA programs and regarded as the best in the country. So if you are interested in the health sector, Fuqua would be a great fit and you should definitely voice this in your essays.

Btw, I am a first year MBA student in the HSM program.

Many thanks to Duke2006 and kevin_8p for answering the questions so fast!

Kevin_8p, I'm glad to hear that you're in the HSM program. I'll definitely post more questions about this concentration later on...

Good luck to you guys in the new school year!

I worked for a mid-size biotech company in the US for 2 years before coming to Fuqua. The fact that I did mostly research related jobs does not really help me in the application, but I argued that I have gained a better view of the health sector, which will help me reach my future goals.

The main idea here is to tell a story that makes sense, whether you worked in the US or in China, whether in business or research. Think about what your goal is and how your past experiences have surrounded this goal, and why the HSM program will help you achieve that goal. If you come from the health sector, it will obviously be easier for you to make the case for HSM, but it's definitely not required.

Kevin, sorry, I just realized that I have more questions to ask.  I am applying for the 1st round, but haven't submitted online application yet (deadline: 11/1).  The school website says that the interview has to be on or before 11/16.  If I submit my package on or before 10/15.  Is it possible for me to get a slot for the alumni interview before 11/16?  How many Chinese students from us biotech or pharm industry in the HSM program?  Do most of you hold a master degree or Ph.D degree?  How is the job replacement for Chinese students in HSM program?  Which industry do most of you choose?  back to biotech or pharm, or consulting, or I-banking?  How many students does Amgen or Genentech recruit from your program this year?

so many questions... thanks again

I'm not sure about the interview policy now, I remember I was able to request an interview before I submitted my application. But anyway, I think it is still pretty early in the game and you shouldn't have a problem scheduling an interview.

How many Chinese students from us biotech or pharm industry in the HSM program?

Most Chinese students in the HSM program have worked in the US. They were either researchers in acacdemia or from the industry. But this does not mean that HSM is only open to ppl who worked in the US. I think the main reason for unbalanced representation of Chinese students is due to the lack of knowledge of the program. And this is exactly what we hope to correct. So apply for it!

Do most of you hold a master degree or Ph.D degree?

As I mentioned above, the sample size is too small to be meaningful. There is no degree barrier to the HSM program.

How is the job replacement for Chinese students in HSM program?

HSM is a great way to enter the healthcare industry. I would say you have a better chance than other Chinese students who are not in HSM to get a job in the healthcare industry.  But this is just my general understanding.

Which industry do most of you choose?  back to biotech or pharm, or consulting, or I-banking?

I'm not sure about others, but I am targeting the bio/pharma industry.

How many students does Amgen or Genentech recruit from your program this year?

They have been active in recruiting, I'm guessing 2-3 for each company from last year's data.

so many questions... thanks again
