Jean Wagner’s most enduring contribution to the study of Afro-American poetry is his insistence that it be analyzed in a religious, as well as secular, frame of reference. The appropriateness of such an approach may seem self-evident for a tradition commencing with spirituals and owning its early forms, rhythms, vocabulary, and evangelical fervor to Wesleyan hymnals. But before Wagner a secular outlook that analyzed Black poetry solely within the context of political and social protest was dominant in the field.

我大致翻一下：主题就是Ｗ坚持在分析黑人诗歌时候要融入宗教和种族因素
JW对美国黑人诗歌的最大贡献在于他对美国黑人诗歌在一个既宗教也世俗的标准下分析的坚持。这种做法在最初的圣歌和拥有形式、节奏、词汇和对卫斯理诗歌的福音般的热情上看起来是显而易见的，但在W之前，对黑人诗歌的分析只限于它政治和社会保护处于极重要的地位这样的题材上。
