GWD25-Q3.
Mel: The official salary for judges has always been too low to attract the best candidates to the job. The legislature’s move to raise the salary has done nothing to improve the situation, because it was coupled with a ban on receiving money for lectures and teaching engagements.
Pat:  No, the raise in salary really does improve the situation. Since very few judges teach or give lectures, the ban will have little or no negative effect.
Pat’s response to Mel is inadequate in that it
A.    attempts to assess how a certain change will affect potential members of a group by providing evidence about its effect on the current members.
B.    mistakenly takes the cause of a certain change to be an effect of that change
C.    attempts to argue that a certain change will have a positive effect merely by pointing to the absence of negative effects
D.    simply denies Mel’s claim without putting forward any evidence in support of that denial
E.assumes that changes that benefit the most able members of a group necessarily benefit all members of that group

C没问题,我这题的思路也是先理解句意,发现后面的非划线部分"special links between the earthly and celestial realms"说的是emperors,那么最清晰的表达,就是:
allow to be  (allow+infinitive)
perceive as

“但是正确答案c也感觉有个地方不好 be allowed to be done”
The state religion allowed the ritual worship to be performed by emperors, who ____.

1. GWD18-Q34
The state religion of ancient China, which came into existence at least as far back as the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to A.D. 220) and perhaps as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty (1050 B.C. to 771 B.C.), allowed only emperors performing the ritual worship of heaven, perceiving them as special links between the earthly and celestial realms.

A.    only emperors performing the ritual worship of heaven, perceiving them as
B.    only emperors to perform the ritual worship of heaven, with the perception of them being
C.    the ritual worship of heaven to be performed only by emperors, who were perceived as
D.    the ritual worship of heaven, performed by emperors only, with the perception of them as
E.    the ritual worship of heaven as performed by emperors only, who were perceived to be

be allowed to be done

http://gmatclub.com/forum/increased-importance-of-modifiers-128608.html

http://www.beatthegmat.com/cotton-and-bollworms-t59004.html

# of corns planted: more than usual
worm damages: this year cannot sustain (usually can sustain)

A.Whether corn could be bioengineered to produce the insecticide
提到了,yes.
C.Whether other crops ...无关
D.
Whether plantings of bioengineered cotton are frequently damaged by insect pests other than bollworms
无关
E.
Whether there are insecticides that can be used against bollworms that have developed resistance to the insecticide produced by the bioengineered cotton

而B,明确提出"this year",且B就是说,既然"more corns than usual",是否有次品,就说并非全部genetically engineered?

40. GWD-23-Q14

Plantings of cotton bioengineered to produce its own insecticide against bollworms, a major cause of crop failure, sustained little bollworm damage until this year. This year the plantings are being seriously damaged by bollworms.Bollworms, however, are not necessarily developing resistance to the cotton’s insecticide.Bollworms breed on corn, and last year more corn than usual was planted throughout cotton-growing regions. So it is likely that the cotton is simply being overwhelmed by corn-bred bollworms.

In evaluating the argument, which of the following would be most useful to establish?

A.Whether corn could be bioengineered to produce the insecticide
B.
Whether plantings of cotton that does not produce the insecticide are suffering unusually extensive damage from bollworms this year
C.
Whether other crops that have been bioengineered to produce their own insecticide successfully resist the pests against which the insecticide was to protect them
D.
Whether plantings of bioengineered cotton are frequently damaged by insect pests other than bollworms
E.
Whether there are insecticides that can be used against bollworms that have developed resistance to the insecticide produced by the bioengineered cotton

Plantings of cotton bioengineered to produce its own insecticide against bollworms, a major cause of crop failure, sustained little bollworm damage until this year. This year the plantings are being seriously damaged by bollworms Background

Bollworms breed on corn, and last year more corn than usual was planted throughout cotton-growing regions. (Premise)
Bollworms, however, are not necessarily developing resistance to the cottons insecticide. So it is likely that the cotton is simply being overwhelmed by corn-bred bollworms. (Conclusion)

In fact, the nature of this reasoning is a cause and effect reasoning. A(Bollworms breed on corn, and last year more corn than usual was planted throughout cotton-growing regions.)and Bsustained little bollworm damage until this yearjust happen together.

Then think about how to weaken and strengthen the cause and effect reasoning. Let's think why B is correct. First, suppose "plantings of cotton that does not produce the insecticide are not suffering unusually extensive damage from bollworms this year ". It proves the conclusion directly. It seems that bollworms are really not developing resistance to the cotton's insecticide. Second, plantings of cotton that does not produce the insecticide are suffering unusually extensive damage from bollworms this year. It just says that bollworms have the resistance. In addition, here is one additional assumption: farmers will provide insecticide to the planting of cotton that can not produce it itself and it does not matter what kind of insecticide is.
