这题的关键是时间,抓住this year相较于以前的特殊点(abnormal vs. normal) # of corns planted: more than usual worm damages: this year cannot sustain (usually can sustain) 然后抓住corns和worms的相互关系,worms靠corns养活,同时(genetically engineered) corns又可以杀worms,所谓“魔高一尺道高一丈”,这个意思。
A.Whether corn could be bioengineered to produce the insecticide 提到了,yes. C.Whether other crops ...无关 D.Whether plantings of bioengineered cotton are frequently damaged by insect pests other than bollworms 无关 E.Whether there are insecticides that can be used against bollworms that have developed resistance to the insecticide produced by the bioengineered cotton
而B,明确提出"this year",且B就是说,既然"more corns than usual",是否有次品,就说并非全部genetically engineered?
3. GWD25-Q3. Mel: The official salary for judges has always been too low to attract the best candidates to the job. The legislature’s move to raise the salary has done nothing to improve the situation, because it was coupled with a ban on receiving money for lectures and teaching engagements. Pat: No, the raise in salary really does improve the situation. Since very few judges teach or give lectures, the ban will have little or no negative effect. Pat’s response to Mel is inadequate in that it A. attempts to assess how a certain change will affect potential members of a group by providing evidence about its effect on the current members. B. mistakenly takes the cause of a certain change to be an effect of that change C. attempts to argue that a certain change will have a positive effect merely by pointing to the absence of negative effects D. simply denies Mel’s claim without putting forward any evidence in support of that denial E.assumes that changes that benefit the most able members of a group necessarily benefit all members of that group Plantings of cotton bioengineered to produce its own insecticide against bollworms, a major cause of crop failure, sustained little bollworm damage until this year. This year the plantings are being seriously damaged by bollworms.Bollworms, however, are not necessarily developing resistance to the cotton’s insecticide.Bollworms breed on corn, and last year more corn than usual was planted throughout cotton-growing regions. So it is likely that the cotton is simply being overwhelmed by corn-bred bollworms.
In evaluating the argument, which of the following would be most useful to establish?
A.Whether corn could be bioengineered to produce the insecticide B.Whether plantings of cotton that does not produce the insecticide are suffering unusually extensive damage from bollworms this year C.Whether other crops that have been bioengineered to produce their own insecticide successfully resist the pests against which the insecticide was to protect them D.Whether plantings of bioengineered cotton are frequently damaged by insect pests other than bollworms E.Whether there are insecticides that can be used against bollworms that have developed resistance to the insecticide produced by the bioengineered cotton
