战斗到最后,就是胜利! 60. Not only did Christopher Columbus refuse to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, he also pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, finally receiving approval and financing from King Ferdinand of Spain in 1492 after several rejections.
A Not only did Christopher Columbus refuse to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, he also pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, finally receiving
B Not only did Christopher Columbus refuse to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, also pressing relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia; he finally received
C Christopher Columbus not only refused to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, but he pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, and finally receiving
D Christopher Columbus not only refused to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat but pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, finally receiving
E Not only refusing to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat but pressing relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, Christopher Columbus, finally receiving
In this sentence, two parallel ideas – the idea that Christopher Columbus refused to accept the conventional wisdom and the idea that he pressed for funding for his voyage – are connected by the parallel indicators “not only” and “also.” The correct idiom is either “not only X but also Y” or “not only X but Y.”
(A) This choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.
(B) The two constructions at the beginning of this choice are not parallel: one of them is a clause, with a subject and verb (“did Columbus”), while the other is simply an –ingconstruction. Moreover, in order to be parallel with “not only,” the second construction should be preceded by “but.” Further, the part of the sentence before the semi-colon is not a complete sentence.
(C) The two constructions at the beginning of this choice are not parallel; the construction following “not only” is just a verb phrase, with no subject (“refused”), while the construction following “but” is a full clause, with both a subject and a verb (“he pressed”). Furthermore, the final construction is introduced with the conjunction "and" – a parallelism signal – but that construction is an –ingform (“receiving”), which is not parallel to any other construction in the sentence.
(D) CORRECT.The constructions after “not only” and “but” are properly parallel (“refused” and “pressed”). Additionally, the final construction (“finally receiving”) maintains the construction in the original sentence, a comma + -ingtype modifier, properly conveying the idea that Columbus’s success in securing royal funding was a direct result of his persistent efforts.
(E) This is a sentence fragment; there is no main verb. The parallel construction at the beginning is constructed as an initial –ingmodifier, and the words after the subject Christopher Columbus are another modifier (-ingconstruction blocked off by commas). Therefore, the subject Christopher Columbus does not have a verb.
比较简单的一题,主要就是not only.......but (also)的用法,这里面的but是不能省略的,但是有时候also是可以省略的。同时,v-ing形式做伴随结构时前面不能加and,否则and后面就成了sentence segment。这些都是实战中可能遇到的考点。
恭喜大家,都做对了!
