My family is unique because... ...

I have a very ordinary family and I left my family many years ago when I was young.
So there is very little family influence on me, my career and my personality in general.
I just don’t feel my family is so unique that I have no clue about this essay.

please help.

Where did you find this topic?? 2 essays this year are:
# What events or people have had the greatest influence in shaping your character and why? (750 words)
# Describe your short-term and long-term career goals. What is your motivation for pursuing an MBA now and how will UCLA Anderson help you to achieve your goals? (750 words)

feel sorry for you, man

'ordinary' doesn't mean 'not unique'. Does any of your family member have any influence on you in any way? You have to dig, dude. Try to remember every little thing your family did or every word your parents/relatives said. I'm sure you could find a bunch. You just need to find one that is consistent w/ whatever you want adcom to know about you.

If this still doesn't work, I guess you can 'circumvent' it by saying something like 'Another person XXX, although not directly related to me, is now my family. He did A, B, C that influenced me, blablabla" You get the idea....

And actually the fact that you left your family (I suppose, for US??) when you were young is quite unique. You just need to pitch it right

It is for FEMBA (fully employed MBA). The ones you gave is for full-time MBA which is chased by most of the people in this forum.
I think I got your idea. I will try to dig... ...

thanks

I'm sure the question is not just simply asking how special your family is, because most of our families are hardly special at all, besides there is usually a specific section during the application process to fill out information of your parents to point out that your parents are indeed "somebody", it'd be redundant to dedicate an entire essay question to serve that purpose.  So, I think this question is just like another questions that are asking "who are you as a person?" except in this case, how did your family shaped you into who you are today.  From your point of view, you can certain talk about how the lack of family tie has influenced you, that maybe you've always been independent, a real go-getter from early on, that you've never had anything handed to you but you had to struggle and fight for the things you want in life, and stuff along that train of thought.
