Q41:

The greatest road system built in the Americas prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus was the Incan highway, which, over 2,500 miles long and extending from northern Ecuador through Peru to Southern Chile.

  • Columbus was the Incan highway, which, over 2,500 miles long and extending

  • Columbus was the Incan highway, over 2,500 miles in length, and extended

  • Columbus, the Incan highway, which was over 2,500 miles in length and extended

  • Columbus, the Incan highway, being over 2,500 miles in length, was extended

  • Columbus, the Incan highway was over 2,500 miles long, extending

  • 前面是is, can, be able to不是动作性动词,好像不能伴随;

    I choose B (was...extended); Answer is E; 这个伴随状语的问题;

    伴随状语总结

    13.   By law, a qualified physician can only prescribe medicine, protecting the public.

    (A) By law, a qualified physician can only prescribe medicine, protecting the public.

    (B) By law, only a qualified physician can prescribe medicine, protecting the public.

    (C) By law, only a qualified physician can prescribe medicine which protects the public.

    (D) In order to protect the public, by law a qualified physician only can prescribe medicine.E

    (E) In order to protect the public, by law only a qualified physician can prescribe medicine.

    541   Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.

    (A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors

    (B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors

    (C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do

    (D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in unclear reactorsE

    (E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart

    44.    Using a Doppler ultrasound device, fetal heartbeats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

    (A) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, fetal heart-beats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

    (B) Fetal heartbeats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy, using a Doppler ultrasound device.

    (C) (In order to detect意思更合理) Detecting fetal heartbeats by the twelfth week of pregnancy, a physician can use a Doppler ultrasound device.

    (D) By the twelfth week of pregnancy, fetal heartbeats can be detected using a Doppler ultrasound device by a physician.E

    (E) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, a physician can detect fetal heartbeats by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

    Choice A presents a dangling modifier. The phrase beginning the sentence has no noun that it can logically modify and hence cannot fit anywhere in the sentence and make sense. Coming first, it modifies heartbeats, the nearest free noun in the main clause; that is, choice A says that the heartbeats are using the Doppler ultrasound device. Choice B contains the same main clause and dangling modifier, now at the end. Contrary to intent, the wording in choice C suggests that physicians can use a Doppler ultrasound device after they detect fetal heartbeats. In choice D the phrase using... device should follow physician, the noun it modifies. Choice E is best.

    1. Columbus was the Incan highway, which, over 2,500 miles long and extending
    2. Columbus was the Incan highway, over 2,500 miles in length, and extended
    3. Columbus, the Incan highway, which was over 2,500 miles in length and extended
    4. Columbus, the Incan highway, being over 2,500 miles in length, was extended
    5. Columbus, the Incan highway was over 2,500 miles long, extending

    前面是is, can, be able to不是动作性动词,好像不能伴随;

    这里不是伴随,是分词短语修饰highway,可以理解为which was extending...的省略形式。

    LESMM;

    句子, -ing; such structure may cause ambiguity. It is hard to discern whether participle phrase is used to modify the aforementioned noun or the whole sentence.

    I consider that "extending" should follow the road system or highway immediately.

    participle phrase seprates far from the modified noun "road system" or "highway";

    To be discussed....

    这个似乎是有点搞的,但是就偶做这题的思路来讲,偶没有考虑这个问题,偶看到题目是这样想的:

    1.先看所有选项的最前面和最后面的几个单词的区别,这里开头都一样,就看最后的。

    2. 看到extended和extending, 偶的第一反映是修饰对象是主动还是被动。-这点没什么理由,就是直觉。

    3. 判定主动后,先排除B,C,D, 然后A,是显然不对的,其实在看选项以前看提干时A就否定了。

    再贴一个新东方的相关判断原则供参考:

    which 修饰对象的判断原则:
    名词后面的长、宽、高或名词后面的called分词短语不影响定语从句修饰长、宽、高前面的
    名词或者called分词短语前面的名词;定语从句跳跃修饰前面的核心名词。

    LESMM:

    B的extended不是被动,而是动词的过去时,是主动????

       我选E:weiyu斑竹说的be就不能伴随的理论我没听说,

       weiyu斑竹的意思是因为主句动作是be,无法伴随动作。但是我印象中应该是可以的。逻辑主语一致就行

       weiyu斑竹举的例子里,我觉得主要错误不在于无法伴随,而在于伴随了导致句子意思错

       B选项意思错:The greatest road system(是 the Incan highway),(长度超过2,500 miles )这个部分是作为was后的平行项,还是作为修饰语??,(并且延伸。。。)前后部分意思上不构成并列

    如果说extended与前面的was谓语并列是主动的话,则是road system extended...逻辑意思不对吧。

    weiyu :  1  形容词短语前有逗号作定语 逻辑主语默认为主句主语.

    2 两个相同修饰部分之间有连词and不用逗号隔开

    前面是is, can, be able to不是动作性动词,好像不能伴随    ? ? 没听过.

    3 e 中ving 作状语 主语为 Incan highway

    4  偶得发现gwd的阅读好搞阿~~ 你给评价一下?

    可能是我理解的过于绝对了。但是当时看到过一个帖子。只有动作才能导致伴随(动作或结果),而be, can, be able to通常都表示一种状态。以为这样对伴随是个有效的判断。看来不是。请指正。

    1,目的状语不行,不能说,in order to, sth/sb is. 但是伴随是可以的。

    2,The greatest road system built in the Americas prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus was the Incan highway, which, over 2,500 miles long and extending from northern Ecuador through Peru to Southern Chile.

    B.Columbus was the Incan highway, over 2,500 miles in length, and extended

    硬伤:was错,必须用is,这是个客观现实。

    软伤:over 2,500 miles in length可作状语或定语;而且这个was的作用范围会到extended,会有歧义。虽然was是系动词,从语法上不会被理解成助动词,但是这种was+表语 and ved的结构是个不好的结构。
