long在这句中也是表示长度的意思吧,而不是时间

这里covered 做后置定语修饰land

这句话的意思是，先驱们把土地清扫后建成农场，城市和道路之前，森林占据了现在illinois州的40的面积。

这样就可以看出主谓来了，covered是谓语动词。before从句是过去时，主句不一定要用完成时态的。这里用过去时还是比较好理解的。

我觉得你的理解是对的，表示身体长度的时候，应该是用length比较合适。motion这里没有问题。

而xkfy的第一个解释也有问题。in 我觉得通常是改成of 比较好，如果改成that的话把整个句型都改掉了，但是也是说得通的，改成with肯定不对
