Based on our discussion above, we can safely draw the conclusion that the government bare irresistible responsibility in protecting the diversity of art. However, the significance of efforts from any social units including individual and any organization should not be overlooked.” 考试千万不要考艺术类的题啊,想举个例子都难。 ******************** Date: 2010-8-28 Time: 23:30:06 Issue No.116 ******************** Question:
`A government should provide funding forthe arts, but only for those artistic works that reflect the values andattitudes of the majority of the population.~ Discuss the extent to which you agree ordisagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/orexamples from your own experience, observations, or reading. ******************** Your Answer: Nowadays with higher standard level, anincreasing number of people spend more time in activities to enlarge theirmental entertainment, for example, appreciatingthe master pieces of novels, paintings, and drama. But what decides the valueof arts? This question, though seems to be simple at the first glance, cannotbe answered easily. Rather, different people with different backgrounds such aspast experience, culture, religion, and education, may give different answers. Some people argue that the more a piece of art is recognized by the generalpublic, the more value it carries; they thus call for the government attentionto only protect the artistic works that reflect the values and attitudes of themajority of the population. However, opponents posit that the real value of arthas nothing to do with the public recognition, in that real arts value becauseit reveals the beauty or the underlying meaning of the world, which cannot be comprehended by themajority of people. As far as I am concerned, not only the artistic worksreflecting the majority public virtues should be well protected, but also those reflecting theminority merits should also be treated carefully. First, we know that just as not all thefamous artists were well recognized in their decades, so were their works. Iwould like to take a Chinese poet's case as an example. Mr. Du Fu, a great poetin Tang Dynasty, was not considered talented during the time he was alive. Instead he was toowise to be accepted by the general public at his time, especially by thecentral government. But some years after his death, people were astonished byhis beautiful and fantastic poems. So even if some arts do not reflect thecurrent majority value, in the future perhaps they will. Therefore, funds andtime invested in protecting them will be worthwhile. In the second place, even sometimes somework will not eventually agree with the general opinion, they are still vitalsince they provide different understanding of the world. It is diversity andcreativity makes the arts so beautiful and interesting. Imagine, how dull willthe world of arts be if all the works reflect one idea! So to keep thediversity of arts, government should take actions to protect those works, evenwhen they disagree with the majority values. To sum up, government should notdiscriminate any art works in the process of protecting them, as long as theywill enrich the mental wealth of all human beings. (416)
