Boston University (BU) MBA Class of 2013 & 2012 Taking Questions

This is an answer from a current student in the non-profit program. Hope it is helpful.

1.Curriculum at a glance:
Required:
q AC840 Nonprofit Finance and Accounting
Electives: Three courses selected from the following list are required:
q IM852 Brazil Field Seminar
q MK867 Marketing Social Change
q OB840 Management Consulting Field Project
q OM845 Clean Technology Business Models
q PL837 Strategic Fundraising and Corporate Philanthropy
q PL849 Global Sustainability
q PL850 Social Entrepreneurship
q PL868 Corporate Governance, Accountability, and Ethics
q PL870 Government, Society, and Entrepreneurship
q PL882 Public Policy Analysis (formerly FE882)
2.Extra Curriculum activities
q Collaborative consulting and Link Day:  connect students with local nonprofit organizations and  provide consulting service to them
q PNP Club: offer Lunch & Learn opportunities  with nonprofit professionals and leaders and run skill-building workshops
q Net Impact Club: a BU chapter of a global network of MBA students and business professionals seeking to make positive impact on the world through responsible management and sustainable practices.
3.Internship
300-hour internship with public or nonprofit organizations is required to graduate from PNP.   It’s not really easy for international students to get a summer internship, but it’s not that difficult either. My summer internship was unpaid.
4.BU PNP program and Job Opportunities
Without much experiences comparing BU PNP with those offered by other universities, I could only suggest there are certainly a lot of similar programs ranking higher than BU PNP.  My experience here has been great though.  There are indeed some top notch professors in the school.  Besides, the strategic location of Boston, with a great number of nonprofit organizations, gives some unique edge of the program here.  There is easy access to all kinds of events and professional associations.    It’s always more challenging for international students to land a job here, and the recession has imposed some really negative impact on nonprofit hiring.  But there is always a sunny side to look at--- nonprofits don’t require quota to hire an international student.
5.Career switcher
It sounds to me that you are a career switcher.  I am.  I truly believe in the great potential in the nonprofit sector in China, but am also quite aware that it’s not the time yet.  As a career switcher, I think the most challenging part is to figure out which path you want to take. Nonprofit is a huge sector and there are a lot of paths in different fields.  Also, unless you really climb up to the top, the financial return won’ t be comparable to your MBA peers.  You may want to weigh that into your consideration too.
